 Die Mosel und ihr enges Tal sind für viele ausländische Touristen Inbegriff deutscher Weinseligkeit. Tatsächlich hat der Weinbau die Gegend schon seit den Römern geprägt. Doch die Ausrichtung auf den Wein alleine zeugt auch davon, dass das Moselland wirtschaftlich seit Jahrhunderten im Schatten stand. Es litt bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg unter der Grenzlage zu Frankreich. Im Schatten des Kanonendonners tat sich diesseits und jenseits der Grenze die wirtschaftlich-industrielle Entwicklung schwer. Gottlob sagten Naturschützer heute. Denn so kann das Moseltal nach wie vor mit viel Natur aufwarten, geprägt vom südländischen anmutenden Klima. Allerdings gefährdet unter anderem gerade auch der moderne, technisierte Weinbau den Schutz der Natur.
