Im Frühjahr 1940 beginnt Irène Némirovsky die Arbeit an einem Buch, das ganz in der Tradition des großen europäischen Familienromans steht. Über Jahre hat sie die träge Selbstzufriedenheit der bürgerlichen Kreise, in denen sie verkehrte, beobachtet. Sie hat erlebt, wie diese Familien sich in Sicherheit wiegen und sich weigern, die Zeichen der Zeit zu erkennen. Nun will Némirovsky ihnen den Spiegel vorhalten.
Der Roman, der unmittelbar vor "Suite française" entstand, wurde erst posthum 1947 veröffentlicht und ist der illusionslose Abgesang auf ein Bürgertum, das feige vor der Wirklichkeit die Augen verschließt.
