Newly-appointed District Sheriff Tristan Haraldsen and his wife Elsebeth are looking forward to a peaceful semi-retirement in the remote fishing village of Djevulsfjord on the stunningly beautiful island of Vagar. But when two boys go missing during the first whale hunt of the season, the repercussions strike at the heart of the isolated coastal community. As he pursues his investigations, Tristan discovers that the Mikkelsen brothers aren’t the first young men to have vanished on Vagar. Determined to solve the mystery of Djevulsfjord, yet encountering suspicion wherever he turns, Haraldsen comes to realize he and his wife are not living in the rural paradise they had imagined, and that the wild beauty of the region hides a far darker reality.

Personally, I don’t think this story is up to, and on a par with David Hewson’s usual output. Possibly too many characters, which serve to detract from the coherence of the plot?

Disappointing

Loved the story and the narration. A great combination. Can we have more please David!

Atmospheric and thought provoking.

I usually love David Hewson’s books but this one was a chore to get through! The characters are almost all unremittingly unsympathetic and while the characterisation of the Faroe Islands may be accurate, it is an incredibly bleak depiction of their culture and lifestyles. Really not for me.The narration was excellent though.

The usual brilliant context from Hewson - and a ripping story with strong characters as well.

I have loved David Hewson books but the graphic and overly gory depiction of the Pilot Whale kill drive in the Faroes. It’s tradition. We know it happens, but this story was just too much. Sickening.

The narrator did his best, but he was given a horror story to tell.

Sorry, too much animal cruelty
