Summary

Every good Dick needs a sidekick....

Actor Tom Lewis’ world came crashing down when a honey trap and tabloid exposé outed him and put pay to his flourishing career. The housewives' favorite was most well-known for his role as Detective Fox in the quaint British series, Malmesbury Murders. But after the media speculation about his sexuality, the show is in hiatus, and Tom hasn’t worked six months.

Now things are getting serious; money is running out, and Tom needs a job desperately. So when his agent offers him a seasonal acting job, he reluctantly agrees... and takes on the role of Santa for a top London department store. This decision changes Tom’s luck.

When Tom overhears two unidentified store workers discussing a job to get a little Christmas bonus, he realizes the job is of the illegal sort. Now, Tom could call the police, but then again, wouldn’t it be great for his flagging career if Detective Fox saved the day?

So Fox is on the case, and as every good Dick needs a sidekick, Tom decides a sexy young elf named Eli Mason will fit the role, in more ways than one.

Note: This is an M/M romantic comedy with gay sexual content.

Fun Christmas Novella

This is a fun Christmas novella about Tom who's an actor who has taken a gig as Santa at a
department store after having his career put on hold due to a scandal.

Tom meets his Eli who is his elf helper at the store.

This is a funny and clever update on a british mystery, even though this was a funny caper (hence the title) it had some hot sex in it as well. Tom and Eli make a great couple, I can't wait to see what happens next with them and hopefully solving a few more mysteries along the way.

As usual Gary Furlong did a great job narrating.

Great Characters, Perfect Narration

I was looking for something light and seasonal to listen to and found Detective Fox.
This was my first Isobel Starling book and will not be my last.
I found the writing LOL funny and the story plot to be clever.
There were A LOT of colourful characters in this book, and the narrator gave each of them their voice and individuality, which gave this a Christmas movie feel. I have to give an extra nod to Gary Furlong for a wonderful performance.

If you are looking for a British farce heist with a kinky M/M twist, then l highly recommend this audiobook

Christmas Comedy Gold!

Listening to "Detective Fox and the Christmas Caper" was like listening to a Christmas movie.

Gary Furlong really raised the bar with this narration, voicing a whole cast of characters from the moody Northern Actor Tom Lewis, to Eastend baddies. He did it with ease and perfect comic timing. It was just so entertaining and I had face ache by the time I was finished.

The story itself, is very English. It's about an ingenious department store robbery, that Tom- who plays santa and Eli, who plays his elf assistant aim to foil the robbery. The plot is believable and with a colourful cast of side characters, we are swept along not only with the glitter of Christmas, but by the M/M romance between Tom and Eli, and their surprisingly kinky sex life.

The end had me in stitches. This story and the narration are a perfect antidote to the stress of the season.

Terrific narration

Honestly, how have I not listened to something narrated by Gary Furlong before? This audio was fantastic!

The story is well described by the blurb. Told in multiple POV, the plot requires some suspension of disbelief, but this is a fun, quirky Christmas mystery. While it may not be super plausible, it’s lighthearted and amusing, and well-polished by Furlong's narration.

There's an obvious love of the location (I just visited London for the first time and this brought me back in my memories), some kink if you're into it, a lot of humor and shenanigans - and Furlong pitches his performance to easily cover all the nuances of the story.

It's the first in a new series and ends with a strong HFN and the possibility for the main characters Tom and Eli to develop their relationship more fully as the series progresses.

Gary Furlong provides exceptional narration with a great use of character voices and accents, and terrific timing and pacing. He performs this story like an old radio show, and it's just purely entertaining to listen to.

I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more audios from Gary Furlong in the future.

Solid 3-Star Cozy Mystery/RomCom

I enjoyed this, probably more in audio than if I'd read it outright. The plot is light and has a romantic comedy feel to it. There is a mystery but it is mostly cozy and fanciful. Still, the plot and pacing was decent and fun. The characters were good, although the relationship between our two MCs wasn't wholly satisfying to me as it felt they didn't grow enough... But still, the relationship did progress and I'm thinking we might get more in the next book.

Gary Furlong as narrator did really well and lifted the story to an enjoyable 3-star rating. His pacing and comedic inflections made this a fun listen. The best part was the "caper-ish" scene at the end... Furlong did so well that I had a clear mental picture of the last scenes and was laughing out loud.

Overall, a decent listen with some good, funny moments. I'm thinking I will probably re-listen around Christmas time, just for fun.

ho ho ho in the top drawer....

SO do not listen to this openly if there are others around, I knew there would be some adult scenes but didnt realize it was that graphic haha. Typical falling in love trope but the other twists keep it interesting and the feel was very detailed, as if the writer knew the process of auditioning.

A Fun Christmas Romance - Can't Wait for More!

Actor Tom Lewis, the 40-something star of a British murder mystery series, has been outed by the tabloids and the series is on hiatus. Not having worked in 6 months, Tom accepts a job playing Santa Claus at a high end department store in London. Young Eli and his friend audition to play elves. Tom overhears a plot to rob the store on Christmas Eve, and so does Eli. Tom and Eli hook up in more ways than one to solve this crime, hoping it will bolster Tom's career and get the show back on track. But for Tom, this isn't just a one-off with Eli.

Gary Furlong brings wonderful life and depth to Isobel Starling's characters once again. If you haven't heard him before, you are in for a treat.

This is a short, but it will leave you wanting more of Tom and Eli for sure!

Hilarious

When the bad guys run amuck, it’s time for Santa to take matters in his own hands..
Actor Tom Lewis is down on his luck. After being outed by a newspaper, he is having trouble finding work. Even the producers of his very successful character Detective Fox are thinking about replacing him. To make ends meet, he accepts a seasonal role playing Santa in one of London most exclusive department store. What seems a last resource becomes a career saving opportunity when he discovers a plot amongst the employees to rob at the store during the holidays. Instead of going to the police, Tom decides to investigate on his own, with the help of three very clever and resourceful fellow actors playing elves. The sundry team sets to prevent the felony, with hilarious results…
This was a great seasonal story, with endearing characters and an entertaining plot. I loved the budding relationship between Eli the elf and Tom. Although as a general rule I find it difficult to believe in romance based on insta-attraction, this was different, as Eli had had a crush on Tom for some time. They match each other needs perfectly, and their association both in the bedroom and out of it has very satisfactory results… The rest of the characters are likeable as well. The plot is simple but it works, all in all making for a very amusing story.
As for Gary Furlong’s narration, I enjoyed it a lot. His performance is smooth and the light tone which pervades makes it very easy to follow. He had me smiling most of the time, and even laughing out loud with Tom and Eli’s harebrained adventures…

A silly and fun Christmas romp in London

Gary Furlong and Isobel Starling pair up once again for another winner! This story is an absolute hoot, with a bit of kink and sexy times to go with a real life mystery for an actor that is in between shows due to being recently outed by a hookup, and a sexy elf. When the famous 'Santa' and the quirky 'Elf' get together, sparks fly. But that is not all! We are taken through various parts of London and given little history or teaching lessons too, which I found very enjoyable.
This story had me giggling, and thoroughly enjoying the wit and humor and byplay of all the supporting cast as well as the main characters. For a short little holiday story, this one was loads of fun! Do yourself a favor and give it ago. You can't go wrong with this combination!!

Nice...and Naughty

I really enjoyed this Christmas tale by Isobel Starling! The audiobook was sexy and funny, with just the right amount of kink. Isobel's kink is very adult and romantic. It never comes across as dirty or nasty to me. The romance story between an outed, somewhat down on his luck star, and an acrobatic young man playing an elf in a mall Santa show is accompanied by an intriguing and intricate story of thieves using innocent mystery shoppers to help them pull off a big heist. The story is entertaining and well- developed, and just plain funny. I had to laugh at the garbage truck chase scene. (Listen to the story if you want to know what I'm talking about!) It's a Christmas story, so of course good triumphs over bad, and romance wins in the end.

The narration is superb. I have listened to several books narrated by Gary Furlong, and he always provides a good pace with distinguishable voices for the different characters, with scene-appropriate tone.

I was provided this free review copy audiobook by the author. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Get your Elf hat and holiday cheer on!

This book was not what I was expecting, and I think that is its biggest virtue. I was thinking this book will be much more about the kink, and as much as I would have liked it the, the way the plot was constructed worked much better. The kink is a part of Tom’s life, the catalyst (in a way) to having him work at the department store as Santa but its not explained in detail and there is no introduction of the kink into his and Eli’s relationship. This story is much more interesting and fun when it’s a detective story/mystery/ Who-Done-It and fits the seasonal theme better. Had the subject of kink been more prominent in the story I fear it would have subtracted from it and not been given its due respect. It was also refreshing, to read a book with kink elements that are beyond very light without it being the main issue. The characters were funny, and the plot built in an interesting fashion that added to the thrill of the mystery.

As usual, Gary Furlong’s narration is fantastic, rich and versatile. Every character has a unique voice, accent and pitch, Gary is a master at British accents and delivers a compelling, funny and captivating performance.
All in all a fun, sexy, holiday themed book for the kinky detectives at heart.
