About this listen

After a brief vacation, graphic designer Remi Painter starts working for the Hunger House, a homeless shelter in downtown York, Pennsylvania, refining their website under a tight deadline for chump change and feeding the community in his off time.

But when he finds remnants of human remains in a dumpster behind the nonprofit headquarters after serving, Remi's random observation is called into question. To prove his innocence, Remi begins to snoop around, discovers problems within the Hunger House, and sets into motion a series of seemingly unrelated events in the days that follow.

Can Remi track down the killer and help restore order and justice or will evil prevail?

Joshua Holmes does a great job of keeping you guessing. The characters all have flaws which lead the listener in many interesting directions. A masterful buildup of plot and suspense. It is a well worth audiobook

Reni Painter, graphic website designer, is also epileptic and has taken what was hoped to be a low stress job at the Hungry House, a charity business designed to help the homeless. When a youth, urged on by his mother, keeps coming back to steal bottles of water, Reni chases him down a dark alley to a dumpster where both be and the mother are hiding. Unfortunately, it is also the resting place of a corpse and Reni is arrested for murder. With the police refusing to listen to him, he turns to his friends for help to prove his innocence.

This very short novella is told in the first person from the perspective of Reni, himself, and Michael Berry admirably performs as the story's narrator, reading the text with feeling and separately voicing the other protagonists. Just an occasional editing repeat glitch noticed. The story itself is slightly unbelievable but there are aspects, like the feelings at the onset of an epileptic fit, and suspicions that some people automatically hold against such illnesses, which are interesting additions. It is a quick, easy listen.

Another great novel! Intrigue, suspense, very well-developed characters, and very professional writing. I love all the characters.

A Great Novel

I enjoying listening to this book although elementary in some ways. The plot was sufficiently intriguing but not highly imaginative. Character development was done well and at a good pace.

Great Writer

I liked this book. Good characters & story development with lots of twists & turns. The main character with a plan-acts just like jumping in without pause for thoughts of consequences. Looking forward to getting more of this series.
