Summary

A novel of Ancient Egypt from the bestselling author of River God. Wilbur Smith is a master at the helm of one of the greatest stories of all time.

On the banks of the Nile, a hero will rise.

Across the lush plains of Egypt, Taita, a freed eunuch slave, wears his authority lightly. Not only is he the close advisor to the Pharaoh, but he is guardian to Pharaoh Tamose’s two teenage sisters, the young beauties Tehuti and Bekatha.

But the kingdom is not at peace. They have been fighting Southern Egypt’s constant and historic enemy, the Hyksos people in the north, since time began. To finally crush them, Pharaoh must turn to his most trusted friend.

Taita, philosopher, poet and expert strategist, has a plan that will see Egypt destroy the Hyksos army and form a coveted alliance with Crete in one move. This plan will take him, his expedition commander Zaras, and their mighty warriors on a perilous journey up the Nile, through Arabia to the magical city of Babylon, then across the open seas to Crete.

The many dangers will cost lives and time, and they will meet battle and betrayal head on. But Taita must not forget his two charges, the spirited young princesses, whose attraction to the very warriors who lead the fight threatens Taita’s meticulous plan and the future of Egypt itself.

Historical Adventure From Ancient Egypt To Minoans

I have always loved Wilbur Smith but one of his most endearing characters is doubtless Taita, the slave who ascended to the Egyptian nobility. He is a Leonardo de Vinci of Ancient Egypt whose genius extends from warfare to music. This adventure takes Taita to the mysterious civilisation of Minoans with supernatural undertones. Wilbur Smith is the next best thing to time travel as he gives you a delicious taste of ancient life with all the excitement, drama, evil and triumphs you could wish for. It is written with a lot of humour although Taita comes across as being arrogant at times. Desert God follows on from River God as Taita cares for the two daughters of Queen Lostris and I recommend you listen to it after River God. After this listen to Warlock and finally The Quest. I do not recommend Seventh Scroll which I viewed as an amusing interlude.

Change.....

5th book in the series & they've gone & changed the story teller 😳. I didn't think it would make any difference, but for me, I'm so sorry, Mike Grady but you're not Taita, you're just not. You don't have that timbre to your voice that Mark Meadows has. I'm going to listen to you reading the 6th book, Pharaoh, but honestly if the folk in Audible were to re-issue books 5 & 6, with Mark Meadows as the story teller, & therefore as Taita, I, for one, would certainly buy the books again, honestly I really would. In my opinion, & it is only my opinion, this is a terrific series ruined. 😥 😢

Why change the narrator

Why change the narrator, this story teller has changed the whole concept of the river god series. It’s read like a documentary. No passion, he has made Taita go from a character that made me play audible to a boring history lesson.
I’m only continuing because I need to know what happened to the hero!!!
Shame on you Wilbur Smith for accepting this change!!!

Back to his best

Any additional comments?

This is Wilbur Smith at his best. After three disappointing books in the Henry Cross series I was beginning to despair that he had lost the plot but my faith has been restored. Good story, excellently read, full of twists -- what more can you ask for?

Last book but not in order

I had expected this book to continue on from the story of the previous one but it seems to go back in time and should have probably been the second book, however when Tayeeta is in Babylon in one of the previous books there is no mention of his first visit. Good story, different narrator to the previous books who is still good but disappointing that it didn't continue on from the last book.

Enchanting and Captivating story, well read

It took me a little time to get used to a new narrator for these books, but not too long. I found the story captivating. Ancient places and civilizations are brought alive, along with clever battles and strands of various love stories.

Yet another great book by Wilbur Smith.

I have read or listened to all of Wilbur Smith's books and enjoyed them all, though my particular favourites are those featuring Taita and all his adventures. In this latest book he has been ennobled by Pharoah Tamose To whom he is a close advisor and also guardian to the Pharoah 's two younger sisters the princesses Tehuti and Bekatha.
Egypt is still fighting its greatest enemy the Hyksos who occupy Southern Egypt and Taita comes up with a plan which he hopes will destroy them and this involves making an ally of King Nimrod of the Babalonians and forming an alliance with Crete by marrying the two Princesses to the Supreme Minos. This of course involves Taita, his commander Zaras and the two princesses in a hazardous journey from the Nile through the Arabiandesert to beautiful Babalon and thence to Crete by land and sea...
I would recommend this book to Wilbur Smith's many readers and anybody else who enjoys an epic story .
Beautifully read by Mike Grady.

Marvellous and enthralling story wonderfully narrated

As usual Wilbur Smith writes a gripping story. The breadth and depth of the characters and places and the excitement of the events that follow one after the other keeps the listener spellbound to the end. I wanted it to go on and on.

Always loved Taita!

Another story of our friend Taita. Entertaining as usual, yet I was a bit diappointed in that this story did not take off where the last one ended, yet rather takes you to another story just between the first and second, or so it seems. A good story, nonetheless, and can't wait for the next one.

enjoyable but tedious

I was glad to finish but as Wilbur gets older and is helped. the books lose the story telling that we all enjoy. perhaps that is too harsh. his original books that are 100% Wilbur were fantastic. now he is 60% and you can tell.
