Leibniz et Spinoza, bien que très infidèles, sont deux grands cartésiens. Les premiers, ils transforment la philosophie en système à partir d'un seul principe, la théodicée, explication de l'existence du mal malgré la toute-puissance et la bonté de Dieu.
