About the creator

Born in Croydon in 1971, Derren’s big break came in 1999 when he was asked by Channel 4 to put a TV show together – Derren Brown: Mind Control. Since then, his name has become synonymous with the art of psychological manipulation. Amongst a varied TV career, Derren has played Russian Roulette live, convinced middle-managers to commit armed robbery, led the nation in a séance, stuck viewers at home to their sofas and successfully predicted the National Lottery. He has won various awards, including a BAFTA, an RTS Award and two Olivier Awards. In 2017, Derren made his stage debut in New York with his show Secret, winning the 2018 NY Drama Desk award for Unique Theatrical Entertainment. As an author, he has received much praise for his best-selling books, Tricks of the Mind, Confessions of a Conjuror and Happy. His successful theatre show, Derren Brown: Showman, ran until March 2023.

Summary

Our emotions play a powerful role in everything we think, everything we say and everything we do. In this series of Boot Camp, Derren Brown is joined by top behavioural scientists and diverse experts to reveal how we can control these powerful and mysterious forces which often hijack our rational thinking and lead us seriously astray. By increasing our emotional intelligence we can improve our lives in every conceivable way.

Episode 1: Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself

What are emotions, what they are for and why do they cause us so much trouble? To start answering these questions, Derren focuses on one of our most basic emotions – fear.

Episode 2: The Green Eyed Monster

Derren explores how the roots of our emotional problems are to be found in our childhood and he confronts the twin green-eyed monsters - jealousy and envy.

Episode 3: Shame on You

Derren reveals how the often crippling effects of embarrassment, shame and guilt can be held in check.

Episode 4: What’s Love Got to Do With It?

Derren dives headlong into love, exploring its powerful role in our lives, along with its brasher companion, lust.

Episode 5: The Joys of Boredom

Derren takes a brief break from being witty and entertaining, to explore the turgid depths of boredom.

Episode 6: Such Sweet Sorrow

Derren wallows in sadness, to reveal how this seemingly negative emotion can be a powerfully positive force in our lives.

Episode 7: What Anger Can Do For Us

Derren looks at the things which trigger our anger and at how we can apply the safety-catch.

Episode 8: An Emotional Education

Derren’s exploration of human feelings reaches an emotional conclusion.

podcast revamped as audiobook

Superb performance and very well researched. i just hate the fact that it's a series of podcasts repackaged as a Audiobook.
it's more like a Kids tv program than a serious book about emotions, with silly background effects, more like Art Attack! So I personally found this hard to take seriously and only finished as background noise while driving. much preferred Chimp Paradox to this.

Delightfully insightful and interesting

I’ve listened to previous podcasts of boot camp and this is another brilliantly thought out podcast into the mind. It’s informative for anyone who is interested in learning about their emotions more and I have throughly enjoyed the brain teasers in this series!! Well done!!

Variable Interest

All the previous subjects and help for the Brain and Body series were highly entertaining as well as informative - I was quite underwhelmed at this latest instalment as although it has some interesting topics there wasn’t an entertaining slant to fill out what are often very dry subjects

The charisma of the author

Fun, light and playful. If it’s a slick performance and general insight into populist phsyco therapy then dive right in.
