Summary

English mentalist and illusionist, Derren Brown, talks to us about the release of his latest audiobook, Happy, and how he believes we can attain peace of mind and solidity within ourselves.

Quoting some of the greatest philosophical minds of the past, Derren explains why he has found affinity with the Stoics and their approach in the pursuit of happiness. Also presenting a highly critical view of modern self-help books, Derren argues against the suggestion that we can control the uncontrollable; the universe will not give you what you desire simply because you ask for it.

First introduced to British audiences through a series of programmes entitled, Mind Control, Derren has been demystifying the subtle art of magical and psychological manipulation for 17 years. With his new audiobook, Happy, he agrees that he's moving on to similar but perhaps more intellectual pastures.

Describing Happy as an 'anti-self-help self-help book', Derren Brown wills his listeners to live in the present and think of happiness as a by-product and not an end in itself.

karma is a batch of cupcakes

I think this takes pressure and feelings of failure off which books such as the secret create. not believing enough, blah blah.
happiness can be simply achieved by allowing yourself a bit more freedom of personal expression. whether that is taking the yes man coat off and saying no! or buying that guitar after wanting to be able to play for 30 years. we are so wrapped up making ends meet, we forget to twiddle our toes in the river.

Stoicism Doesn't Talk About Spirituality?

Aurelius believed in the gods. Didn't think one could really be good without believing in them and thought atheism was immoral. What he seems to express doubt about is life after death. In my reading it was some of the Eastern strains of religion that got much closer to atheist spirituality (if you want to call it that) than Stoicism did, or at least Aurelius did. Religion is like theatre. It is a veil that explains deeper realities. But commoners take the theatrics and the stories for the realities. These myths help in a very real way to give coherence and meaning to infinite complexity, which one could call God. And the question for me at this moment is does the universe require conscious intelligence to form and be sustained? Is it conscious in some form? Is there awareness underlying it all? Can it exist if there is no awareness to experience it?

A little Good Insight

Derren Brown is quite a delight to listen to very self-effacing very intelligent and has a background that is particularly unique. I recommend listening to the Sam Harris interview with him on Sam Harris's podcast for a more in-depth examination of who he is and how he came to be that way
