Inmitten des kalten Kriegs enttarnt das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit der DDR den Fregattenkapitän Winfried Baumann als Spion des BND. Die Baumann drohende Todesstrafe verursacht dem damaligen BND Chef Klaus Kinkel schlaflose Nächte. Auch Anna Gudwin, alias Hannah Herold, findet nach einer schockierenden Nachricht keinen Schlaf und muss Klaus Gudwin aus Pakistan zurück nach Deutschland schleusen. Manfred Mor, der sich zunächst als loyaler Feind aber Helfer positioniert, scheint dabei ein doppeltes Spiel zu spielen und verzögert die Sache. Anna entscheidet, die Rettung von Klaus selbst in die Hand zu nehmen. Ausgerechnet die Akte Winfried Baumann - genannt "Der rote Admiral" - könnte nun vierzig Jahre später die entscheidende Rolle dabei spielen.
