Marie Bregendahl blev kendt for den folkelige realisme i sine noveller fra serien "Billeder af Sødalsfolkenes Liv" (1914-1923), der beskriver en tyveårig periode fra Slaget ved Dybbøl i 1864 frem til 1885 i et kollektiv af sognebønder, som lever deres traditionsbundne liv på landet mellem Skive og Viborg, mens krige og konflikter udspiller sig i periferien. I 1935 blev disse noveller samlet til den store slaegtsroman Sødalsfolkene 1-2.
