Summary

The new jaw-achingly funny novel from David Walliams, the number-one best-selling author! Make your appointment if you dare…. Darkness had come to the town. Strange things were happening in the dead of night. Children would put a tooth under their pillow for the tooth fairy, but in the morning they would wake up to find… a dead slug; a live spider; hundreds of earwigs creeping and crawling beneath their pillow. Evil was at work. But who or what was behind it…? Listen to this book and find out!

My favourite character is Alfie!

If you could sum up Demon Dentist in three words, what would they be?

Sad, Scary,Delightful

What other book might you compare Demon Dentist to, and why?

Billionaire Boy. It is similar because it made me laugh as much as Demon Dentist.

What about David Walliams’s performance did you like?

I liked Raj's accent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any additional comments?

I think you will enjoy it because when David Walliams tells the story he uses adjectives and connectives.

A few cautions for parents of younger listeners

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No - but I would have appreciated knowing a bit more about it before we listened as a family

Would you recommend Demon Dentist to your friends? Why or why not?

Better for children 9/10+

What three words best describe David Walliams’s voice?

Fun, fun, fun

Did Demon Dentist inspire you to do anything?

No

Any additional comments?

I've not read any other reviews of this book which forewarn listeners that the story of the tooth fairy may come up for rather more scrutiny than some might be ready for. The magic is reinstated but there's a wobble or two along the way - and I'm not just talking about wobbly teeth.
We listened in a car journey with children 5 and 8 - as a family we're huge fans of the various David Walliams audiobooks so were excited to listen to this one too. I'm not sure the children enjoyed it quite so much as others, and this is the first we've heard where DW does not do ALL the voices (Raj sounds a bit different in this one!). Some of the story is a bit dark and cranks up the scary atmosphere - parents, be aware and ready to provide reassurance (see first point on this also)
All in all - enjoyable but not our favourite of the DW books.

Buyer beware!

Would you consider the audio edition of Demon Dentist to be better than the print version?

Not read print version, so no idea.

Would you recommend Demon Dentist to your friends? Why or why not?

Only for children aged 9 or over, and not of a nervous disposition!

Any additional comments?

Very very dark. We didn't find it as funny as the previous books. I find it amusing that reviews I read before buying, only warned of the disclosure that the tooth fairy is not real. Presumably these people think that the main character having all their teeth removed without anaesthetic, and then later being dangled over a vat of acid designed to strip the flesh from their bones is OK? My 9 year old children found it quite disturbing, and went decidedly pale at times. That being said, they didn't want to turn it off........

Top notch original fairy tale

David Walliams is undoubtedly a man of many talents, children's author is most dedicatedly one of them. This book is an original take on some age old ideas, feels for the modern world and from an enlightening and funny perspective.
Be forewarned though, sensitive children may well find this story a tad too dark and scary.
Provided you and your children are not too scared this is a great listen as a family and deals with many complex issues (as do all his books). Which I personally believe every child should be exposed to in order to become a rounded human being.
Go on.... I dare you :-)

Excellent!

My daughter has listened to this book so many times that she knows it by heart. She loves all David Walliams books, and has read them all as well as listening to them. It really helps to get her to sleep at night. I can hear her giggling as she's dropping off.

Deliciously hilarious, frightening & heartwarming

My 9 yo son and I have recently discovered David Walliams, and we've very quickly become huge fans. Demon Dentist is the most far-fetched (of a fairly far-fetched set), and we loved it. My son laughed hysterically at many points throughout the story, and frequently imitates the humor and voices himself. David Walliams' performance is first-rate with wonderful voices for all the characters. He's done a marvelous job creating thoughtful and thoroughly entertaining stories for children (of all ages).
