Summary

A Wall Street Journal bestseller.

Danger rises and love is threatened in New York Times bestselling author Susan Stoker’s fourth book of the Mountain Mercenaries series.

Lowell “Black” Lockard, former Navy SEAL, has watched his fellow Mountain Mercenaries settle down with the women of their dreams, but he’s convinced he doesn’t need love. Then he gets a call from Harlow Reese - a chef at a local women’s shelter - and begins to reconsider his decision.

After being continually harassed by a local band of punks, Harlow asks Lowell to give the women of the shelter lessons in self-defense. She doesn’t expect him to take such a special interest in her safety, but he insists on escorting her to and from work, never taking no for an answer. Not that Harlow minds the personal touch...especially when it’s coming from her former teenage crush.

Despite her long history of bad dating luck, seeing Black again makes Harlow rethink her self-imposed celibacy. Easy on the eyes and hard to forget, the man has morphed into an alpha stud. And Harlow may be exactly the type of woman Black is looking for. Making her feel safe isn’t only a duty; it’s a pleasure. But the threats are escalating. The motives are a mystery. And as the danger burns almost as hot as their passion, there’s much more at risk than their hearts.

Great story

I really loved this story. Harlow's terrible dating history was improbable but often funny and sometimes deeply disturbing. Black's 'stealth dating' her because she's given up on dating was great and the fact that he owned up to his mistakes just made me love him more. The fact that he let Harlow soothe his demons melted my heart. They had a real give and take relationship that I absolutely believed in.

Excellent listen

Susan Stoker has another hit with this book. The characters are totally relateble, so the listener is drawn into their world. This, in turn means you just can't stop listening (to the annoyance of your SO!).

Defending Harlow

So love listening to Stella Bloom, always makes the journey of listening even more fun.

I so love this book. I do not know if its because Harlow's and Blacks relationship starts off in a nearly normal way :)

Harlow and Lowell (Black) used to know each other from High School and years later meet again. Black now a Mountain Mercenary, who owns a shooting range and Harlow a chief at a women's shelter. That the mercenaries help out at

Harlow does not date, after having lets say many disasters in the area . I loved how Black was taking her out on dates and she had no idea.... so well done.

The two are very well suited, and when danger happens the two work as a team to save others.

🎧 Harlow and Lowell (Black) 🎧

A much milder suspense than the other books in the series. Easy listening, slow burn romance.
