Nick Stone's future has never looked as bleak. The only person he's ever loved is dead. The only people who might give him a reason not to join her have turned their backs.

Until a chance encounter with a man he saved ten years ago appears to throw him a lifeline . . .

But on the bullet- and bomb -scarred streets of Baghdad, second chances are in short supply. A simple quest becomes a journey to the heart of a chilling conspiracy; too late, he realizes that he is being used as bait - to lure into the open a man he believes can offer some salvation, but whom the darker forces of the West will stop at nothing to destroy . . .

From its violent and shocking opening in the Muslim enclaves of Bosnia, through vivid, lightning-paced action in war-torn Iraq, this unforgettable story proves Andy McNab yet again to be the master of the modern thriller, a writer at the very top of his game.

Loved the story but did get a bit repetitive half way though.

Last hour and half was great felt like the ending was missing something.

Last hour and half was the best

I was put off by reviews saying this book was dull and plodding but I would have to disagree. There's probably less contact action than others so far but this felt like a very different book. The narrative of scenarios describing ordinary people living through the atrocities are chilling.

Gripping from the start

As an ex-military man I knew I’d like Andy McNab’s fiction as I thoroughly enjoyed his personal memoirs from being in the special forces. I’ve read all the Nick Stone books and I read them purposely in order. For me this is the best one, the plot is brilliant with lots of twists, real edge of the seat stuff. I read this book in two chunks, I simply couldn’t put it down. Andy McNab has created a wonderful character who is one of life’s emotionally challenged people scared to let anyone in fully and has been unsuccessful in love, has struggled with all types of relationships and most of what civvy street has to offer, but is brilliant at his job, I for one can identify with that!

Paul Thornley is by far the best narrator I’ve listened too and I’ve listened to a lot of books recently.

Superb Book

Another good read from McNab. Bit of a slower pace than Dark Winter but I felt a constant tension like something was about to happen. A bit disappointing at the end as it ended so abruptly but other than that I enjoyed it

Another good read but ended ubruptly
