Summary

A thrilling new standalone novel from New York Times best-selling author Skye Warren.

Dark. Powerful. Dangerous.

Philip Murphy has all of Chicago under his thumb. Except me.

We met in a perfect storm of violence and lust. He saved me and then disappeared from my life. Now I pretend I never knew that kind of darkness. I focus on midterms and campus parties, as if they can wipe the slate clean.

Then he turns up outside my dorm room - wounded and barely conscious. He's the head of a criminal empire, a powerful man, but he needs me now. There are traitors in his midst.

I can help him, but I can't fall for him.

Not again.

Author's Note: Deep is a dark contemporary romance novel that can be read as a standalone! It's set in the Chicago underground world, and you are invited to listen to those books once you read Philip's story.

Heart palpitations !!

DEEP is an intensely emotional, seductive and gritty story that left me craving more from the talented Skye Warren! I fell so hard for Philip - he was dangerous, powerful and mysterious and oh so deliciously sexy!! I loved his pet name for Ella and OMG, that dirty talking mouth of his had me wanting more!!! The dark and volatile connection between Philip and Ella made my pulse race and sent my senses into overdrive!! 5 "kitten" stars!

just okay

If you can hear the narrator, and tolerate her whining, maybe you can find some enjoyment in this book.

DEEP-LY DISAPPOINTING

I usually love an all consuming dark romance when I’m in the mood for something gritty.. and, after reading the synopsis where words of a “criminal empire”, “danger”, “lust” and “power” initially tempted me into it’s virtual pages, and I was expecting good things. But somehow I missed (or glossed over) the words of “midterms” and “campus” so eager was I to get lost in a world where a powerful Chicago bad boy would meet, be ‘tamed’ and be a tiny bit changed by the love of a strong woman.. however I was sadly disappointed.

Fifteen yr old Claire (aka Ella) was sold because of her father’s debts.. she was confused, chained to pipes, starved, nearly gang raped, had the marks of violence all over her body and was told she’d have to ‘work’ to pay off her father’s debts - $50 a time - $50 a hole. However, this naive virgin miraculously managed to get saved.. which put her in direct contact with Philip.. a rich, cold and powerful Crime Lord fifteen years older than herself. Their time wasn’t right then.. but now, three years later, when a bleeding near death Philip comes for her, she still won’t be ready for what follows.

After finally giving up 60% through, I’m thankfully out of Ella’s head with its depressing thoughts and I’m able to reflect on what exactly went really wrong for me. Well.. I personally didn’t feel their chemistry, I didn’t feel any pull towards each other and I didn’t much like (or connect with) the weak, emotionally starved, adopted heroine who hungered to be loved and mistakingly grabbed for it in a world of secrets and dark enemies. I didn’t respect the manipulative hero either who’d wanted a fifteen year old girl.. but watched and waited in the shadows for three years biding his time before reclaiming his kitten.. but what would you shout out if your 15 yr old daughter was secretly being watched by a 30 yr old man? And I especially didn’t like his unforgivable actions of forced unprotected sex in a one-sided desire for a baby - despite the young heroine’s desperate pleas of no and don’t. The “nobody loves me” teen willingly, and repeatedly, took the hero’s bad attitude, his crap, his cold possession and his secrets.. desperate to be loved. However, couple this with a weak narrator’s whispered words, you get a lacklustre timid heroine who only shows very brief flashes of fight, a dull two dimensional plot and a hero whose weaknesses totally dilutes his dark. Her devirgining was passionless, anticlimactic and wasn’t verbally acknowledged at all. I’d would have liked to hear his POV too.

Worth a credit? For me, it’s a no.. 80% internal musings.. the rest drama, suspense, sex and action. But, just because I gloriously failed at connecting, feeling and investing, it doesn’t mean that you won’t.. so sample the voice, read the reviews and decide for yourself whether it’s a thumbs up or thumbs down listen.
