About this listen

A relentlessly twisting and exciting novel, Deception Game is perfect for fans of James Phelan, Chris Ryan and Vince Flynn.

With enemies closing in, time is running out for Ryan Drake. Shaken by a personal tragedy that forces him to return to the UK, he is presented with a dangerous offer - to travel to Libya and kidnap a high-ranking officer in Gaddafi’s much-feared intelligence service. In exchange, Drake will be given everything he needs to destroy the CIA’s corrupt deputy director, Marcus Cain.

Drake gathers a group of trusted allies and embarks on his most difficult mission yet. But with the desert heat blazing and a civil war looming, events soon spiral out of control. To finish the job and get the team out alive, Drake must unravel a web of deceptions and betrayals and confront the rise of a shadowy new group that threatens to change everything.

Ryan Drake and Anya our great characters. Their story arc and their adventures are well conceived and a good, compelling read.  This 5th book moves thru many plot twists from opening to close and is generally satisfying.  But it flags at times and its not clear where things can go.  Much as we root for Ryan, as the central character he is not very capable, neither a lethal fighter nor a good decision maker.  He is forever buffeted by events rather than shaping them and it gets incrementally harder to believe in or care for him.  What's more he is eclipsed by the secondary character.  It is Anya who is decisive, deadly and mysterious and whom we really are compelled by and remember.  It seems hard to keep this dynamic alive creatively as Ryan flounders and she inevitably loses her mystique.  However the central plot twist is riveting and we hope the characterisation can keep up with it.
The only problem with Will Jordan's writing itself is it carries too much unnecessary clutter. He doesn't seem to understand the importance of pacing and the momentum of too many action scenes is constantly lost by unnecessary descriptions and references which are either not necessary or could come another time.   He constantly tells the reader things they could easily infer.  This infuriatingly slows down sequences that should be happening quickly.
But otherwise the writing is good, the characters both central and passing are well-portrayed and the various twists, little and large, are unexpected and moving.
He will never have the pomp and clip of Forsyth or the technical authority of Clancy but his imperfect characters, perhaps like his writing, are people we care about.

It's good but a wee bit laboured at times.

I am sorry, but this story was to simple and to straight forward. Every suspenseful moment was easy to guess the outcome of. No surprises at all. A bit boring I'm afraid.

Simplistic
