About this listen

Audible presents the start of a thrilling new enemies to lovers, sapphic romantasy trilogy, for fans of Sarah J Maas, Leigh Bardugo and Rebecca Yarros, performed by Jessie Mei Li (SHADOW AND BONE) and Freya Mavor (INDUSTRY)

In the kingdom of Eynhallow, Princess Ythsie is preparing to choose a husband, in order to secure the kingdom’s future. Everything changes when Stroma, a skilled fighter from a remote village, becomes her new bodyguard. As mysterious deaths rock the palace, Ythsie and Stroma uncover a web of ancient magic and deadly court intrigue. The princess discovers she has a rare and dangerous gift - the ability to communicate with the Deathless, Eynhallow's cursed undead army.

Amidst the chaos, rivalry blossoms into romance between the princess and her loyal squire. With enemies closing in and the fate of the kingdom at stake, Ythsie and Stroma must navigate treacherous alliances, their growing feelings for each other, and their own destinies. How far will they go to protect their love and save their homeland?

A great story with great world building- really felt like I was there. I didn’t expect the twist and loved the new direction the story took as a result. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!

A great listen!

I really enjoyed Deathbound. This is a story which straddles multiple genres, from romance to backstabbing palace intrigue and even some notes of horror. But beyond the bones of the narrative, the quality of the prose itself is clearly a cut above, Heather Palmer with a real eye for a poetic turn of phrase, and plunging us into the headspace of the central characters.

Both Stroma and Ythsie are compelling, multi-faceted figures. Ythsie is not immediately likeable, and indeed at first I found her actively annoying, but that is all by design, and her own struggles become increasingly clear. Both Jessie Mei Li and Freya Mavor excel in their vocal performances, too. At no point was this a chore, with there always being something to keep me wanting to continue, from “How will Stroma fare at court?” to “What suitor will Ythsie pick?” to eventual higher-stakes mystery, along with the dark running thread of the Deathless and their hidden story.

A highly accomplished debut, and a real gem for Audible. I am already excited for the second part of the Eynhallow Saga!

A pleasant surprise in the plus catalogue, Deathbound is a well written court intrigue romp with a brash young knight and an angry princess at the heart.

Fealty, longing, lesbians, forbidden magic and dead people..
