Summary

An Adam Dalgliesh Mystery.

From P.D. James, one of the masters of British crime fiction, comes the seventh Adam Dalgliesh novel, set against the bleak fens of East Anglia.

Death of An Expert Witness is a classic work of detective fiction packed with forensic detail, intrigue and suspense.

When a young girl is found murdered in a field, the scientific examination of the exhibits is just a routine job for the staff of Hoggatt's forensic science laboratory. But nothing could have prepared them for the brutal death of one of their own.

When the senior biologist is found dead in his laboratory Commander Dalgliesh is called to the bleak fens of East Anglia, where the murderer is lying in wait to strike again. With a wealth of potential suspects and cautious forensic scientists quick to pass on the blame, Dalgliesh becomes embroiled in the complicated passions that lie hidden beneath the calm surface of the laboratory.

From PD James, the bestselling author of Death Comes To Pemberley, Children of Men, and Death in Holy Orders, comes an atmospheric and thrilling work of detective fiction set in a forensic laboratory on the bleak fens of East Anglia.

This novel was adapted into an ITV television series in 1983 and starred Roy Marsden, Geoffrey Palmer, and Ray Brooks.

Critic reviews

"The greatest contemporary writer of classic crime." (Peter Kemp, Sunday Times)
"P. D. James is one of the national treasures of British fiction... Each new book gives pleasure not just for macabre crimes or ingenious solutions but its density of experience." (Malcolm Bradbury, Mail on Sunday)

Another intriguing story

I'm working my way through the author's Adam Dalgleish novels having listened to them them years ago on audio tapes that are long-gone. Thanks to my ageing brain I've forgotten the details of the stories and who did the murders. Like Ruth Rendell, PD James' books are not just detective novels instead much of the pleasure is in the evocation of the location in which the crimes take place and developing the lives and interactions of the characters. I found this book a bit more confusing than some of the others are there are a lot of character to keep track of if one is not concentrating fully.
AS usual, excellently narrated by Daniel Weyman

Giving up now

Read the series from book one, this, for me, is the best yet.

The story is still over-described and too long to get to the point, but better than the previous novels in the series.

I’ve yet to discover the genius that deserves the acclaim the author receives, so going to stop looking now.

Yet another great book.

This author always catches that moment of suspence and anguish that you really feel you in the room. since I've started reading books by this author, I just can't put them down and always looking for the next one. Brilliance in words.

Daniel’s narration brings it to life

I am going through all the Adam Dalgleish stories. Brilliantly narrated and acted by Daniel Weyman. This story was a bit laborious to start with, and there are a lot of characters to keep up with. Nevertheless, it was a very good listen. I have to confess I didn’t understand the last sentence, I must have missed something along the way.

The best so far

This was by far the easiest to follow. There are usually too many characters and it’s not easy to keep track of them especially as I listen to the audio books while doing other things. I don’t have this problem with any other crime fiction I listen to. I have only continued with this series because I had bought the books in advance. I expected they would be good with such a famous author. I’m more optimistic going on to the next one now. Narration excellent as always
