About this listen

No one talks to the cops. Everyone talks to the bartender. And Avalon Nash is one hell of a bartender.

Avalon is on the run from her life in Los Angeles. Having a drink—while waiting to change trains in the former Olympic town of Tranquility, New York—she discovers the freshly murdered bartender at MacTavish’s. A bartender herself, she’s offered the position with the warning that he wasn’t the first MacTavish’s bartender to meet a violent end.

Avalon’s superpower is collecting people’s stories, and she’s soon embroiled in the lives of artists, politicians, ghost hunters, and descendants of Old Hollywood.

Can Avalon outrun the ghosts of her past, catch the ghosts of Tranquility’s past, and outsmart a murderer? The first book in the Bartender’s Guide to Murder series offers chills, laughs, and 30 of the best drink recipes ever imbibed.

"A shot of classic noir, half-ounce of modern flair, and several ounces of bitters round out this intoxicating literary cocktail. This is a series that fans of both modern and vintage crime alike will not want to miss!" (New York Times best-selling author Tosca Lee)

"A spellbinding mystery I couldn't put down. The bonus? A menu of delicious craft cocktails too tempting to pass up." (Cathi Stoler, award-winning author of the Murder on the Rocks series)

A well written noire mystery. Good, well developed characters with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Avalon is a Bar Tender... nobody ever sees the bar tender and she overhears things.... Abbie Pfaff's narration is very good and brings the story to life. Recommended.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the narrator and leave this honest review.

Good.

I enjoyed this book. However not being a drinker I did find the cocktail recipes at the end of every chapter annoying, it broke up the flow of the story and got in the way of the mystery. If I had been reading I would have skipped over them. I also had no idea that there were that many cocktails in the world, some of the names of the drinks and chapter names were fun though. Having said that it hasn't stoped me from downloading the next book. The story is a little bit slow to begin with, as Avalon settles into her new life and makes friends but the mystery soon had me hooked, uncovering all the small town secrets everybody was keeping. The mystery was good and I had no idea who the killer was. I liked the characters, who were a like able group and Tranquility does sound like a place that would make you get off a train to visit, well apart from the murder of course. They is touch of he paranormal to the story to keep it interesting and unusual. Off to start the next book.
A stop over on her journey home has Avalon stepping up when she discovers the barman dead. Instead of panicing she is mixing drinks and talking to the customers. The owner of the bar asks her to stay on, as he is bartender down and in exchange he will proved her with a room in his hotel. A hotel that has had a number of famous people stay in, some people even say they never left.. Avalon running away from her busy city life quickly falls in love with the town and its residents. Well apart from knowing there is a killer running around loose. Can she find the killer and finally find a place that she belongs? Even learning about the towns past and uncovering many of it secrets?
I liked the narrator. I did find that she was quiet a fast reader, so I did slow my listening down to make it enjoyable.

I loved the narration of Abbie Pfaff, who brings the character, suspense and mystery to your ears.

Avalon is a bartender, who has a very easy way with her, making talking to people, easy and find out there secrets. When she discovers the dead body of another bartender Joseph. She takes over his job. It seems that Joseph was not the first bar man to die suspicious. Soon Avalon soon finds herself in the middle of the investigation with Inspector Spaulding
Great characters. plot and mystery.

This is a very unusual take on the amateur sleuth genre, but I liked it.

The central character Avalon is a skilled bartender who happens to be in a hotel bar when the bartender there is murdered. After she helps with finding the murder weapon and reveals her skill at looking after a bar she stays on to take the dead man's shoes.

The town she is in has two claims to fame, as an Olympic venue and as the retirement town for a famous Hollywood star.
As Avalon uses her chief skill, of people watching and wheedling their stories out of them she discovers that local politics and issues around the film star are both possible clues to the murder.

It did take me some time to get into the story, the narrator's pleasant but rather soft voice didn't help here, but once I got into it I have to say that the different strands to the story kept me guessing as to the guilty party right to the end.

A good story with great characters which I enjoyed a lot.

Unusual but intriguing murder mystery
