Summary

First came Murder at Pride Lodge, where murder met mayhem in the Pennsylvania countryside. Next was Pride and Perilous, the collision of high art and low death at Manhattan's Katherine Pride Gallery. And now, the Pride Trilogy concludes with Death by Pride. It's Gay Pride weekend, the most festive weekend of the year in New York City. Hundreds of thousands of partygoers arrive to show the world how to have a good time.

Stalking the party is the most successful serial killer the city has ever seen. He claims his victims in threes and has just begun his newest spree. Detective Linda Sikorsky comes to town to visit Kyle Callahan and his husband Danny Durban. It's her first Pride Parade and may well be her last. Harmless fun turns to terror in a frantic effort to stop the killer once the first body floats to the river's edge. This time it's personal, and this time one of them might not make it out alive.

Great!

This is a great finale to what has been an excellent series of books. Great characters and very well written. The narration really brings the book to life and the conclusion is unexpected. Highly Recommended.

Felt right !

Trippy story about a mass murderer.

A bit to fast for me and how two people found him so fast where nobody else have not even the police in the digital age especially in a close community like the gay one it shouldn’t be that hard or that easy and just as their friend was tide down in the basement ( the next victim ).
On the other hand, the author Mark McNease have really done an exemplary job writing it all including the heart of a killer and the way he and others feel.

K. C. Kelly narrating was done flawlessly creating a perfect audiobook.

Recommended !!!!

Oded Ostfeld.

I LOVE Kyle Callahan

Where does Death by Pride rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've listened to literally thousands and I can honestly say this is one of the top audiobooks I've heard.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Death by Pride?

The first intro of the psycho killer. It literally sends chills up your spine.

What about K.C. Kelly’s performance did you like?

Hi voice. Wow. His voice reminds me of 'the greats' the narrators that have such beautiful voices they make the story come alive, the actors that were in the old time radio shows he has a beautiful voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No this is a book to be savoured. It's the type of book you listen to every night a little bit before bed. It's a proper story.

Any additional comments?

I was given this book as a gift in return for an honest review but I would have given it one anyway. I'm a big fan of Mark McNease's writing and I love his characters I feel like Kyle and Danny and Linda are old friends.

Brilliant to listen to and nerve wracking.

Would you consider the audio edition of Death by Pride to be better than the print version?

The audio version brings the print version to life.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the way the narrator managed to differentiate between the characters.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The final scene in which all was revealed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part about how one of the murder victims had been planning for his niece's baptism.

"He always took pictures"

What did you like most about Death by Pride?

Whilst the subject, murder by serial killer, is a violent one and the means of death of victims is related here, it is not this more gory side which dominates the book. Instead, we see much of the story unfold from the point of view of the killer (in some ways similar to the Dexter series). This rather downbeat way of relating the events greatly adds to the creepy chill of the story, a chill further emphasised by the narrator, whose reading seems to perfectly capture the voice of Dee.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Death by Pride?

Danny's devotion to Margaret, the original owner of the restaurant, Margaret's Passion.

What does K.C. Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

As already mentioned, for me the narrator became the voice of the serial killer and his delivery really brought him to life. The calm calculatdd creepiness more than compensated for the sometimes odd phrasing in other parts of the book. K.C.Kelly's dialogue voices were also distinct to each person making identification easy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and I did.

Any additional comments?

I was gifted this book by the author via Audiobook Boom in exchange for an honest review. I had never read or heard any of the author's previous work so came to it without expectations or bias. The story itself, simple but good, must take second place to the excellent characterisations of not just the killer, himself, but also of Kyle, his husband, Danny and their visitor, (ex)detective Linda. The interaction between them and the other protagonists (not forgetting the two cats, Smelly and Leonard) is beautifully recorded. Most frightening is that the normality of the people so cleverly drawn ceated a reality which emphasised the horror of the killer's sense of invulnerability.
Well worth the listen.
