Summary

The highly anticipated new book in the bestselling DI Nick Dixon Crime Series.

The body of an elderly man is found in an abandoned World War Two pillbox beside the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal. With no obvious motive and no credible suspect, DI Nick Dixon starts digging into the victim's past.

The more he digs, the deeper Dixon is drawn into a case that takes him from the cave systems beneath rural Somerset to the heart of government, and threatens to expose a military cover-up at the highest level.

Blocked by a wall of silence, Dixon must unravel a dangerous conspiracy before the killer strikes again.

Spoiled by the narration

The storyline was ok but the narration completely ruined it for me, the tone & accent of the various voices did not fit the characters, making it difficult to listen to

Spoiled only by narrator

Great story but could not get into Napoleans narration. Felt like I was listening to a Shakespearean offering. Shame as storyline was very clever. Guess it's like marmite....

Brilliant story shame about narration!

Love this series but Napoleon Ryan as narrator really does spoil the book, he is so drool you don’t get any atmosphere I love audible books but the narration is so important

Ruined for me

The narrator is dreadful. He can’t do accents. Women sound like airhead Barbie dolls as he tortures his vocal cords from is natural bass so much so he sounds like a drag artist mincing. His voice is more suitable for dark horror than anything else. I don’t know why the author persists with this narrator The stories are always good but I read them rather than listen to this abysmal posh voice trying to do characters. Appalling!

Narrator Spoiled It

I quite liked the story but the narrators plain silly voice “characterisations” spoiled it for me.

Just keeps getting better

I have really warmed to the narrator & although some may critize him I enjoy his presentation. As for the storylines they improve with each book & the twists & turns kept me listening from beginning to end

Best so far

Damien Boyd's DI Dixon novels just get stronger. Intricate storyline that just keeps you guessing. Excellent

Narrative was excellent but found the book slow and very drawn out. Struggled to finish.

shame about the narraror

I found the narrators voice really annoying which was a shame as the story seemed compelling enough, however I gave up half way through. Can't really comment on the overall story. would like to hear more from this series if another narrator is used.

The many comedy voices of Napoleon Ryan

Any additional comments?

I don't know Napoleon Ryan. I'm sure he's a very nice chap and a very good actor. The problem is with his narration. I love Damian Boyd's books. I really like the characters, the plot and the police procedural. However, the truly lamentable narration detracts from this. I am a huge fan of audiobooks. Travelling a great deal as I do, it's an easy way of relaxing.

The trouble comes when you're on a flight to - let's say - Germany, and Napoleon introduces a new character. This time, it's a Welsh one. He manages to make the guy - Cuthbert - sound like an Indian version of 'Yoda'. He cost me a whisky as I was laughing so much, I spilled it.

I have complained q.v. about Jan Cramer's sarcastic voicing of - let me see - ALL of her attempts, but she's up against some stiff competition now for the 'Razzie' of audiobook narration.

I'd love to stay and write more, but I've had a trying day and need cheering up, so I'm off to listen to see what's in store. Do I have any idea about what's going on? Barely.

But the comedy voices are a treat...

Come on Audible! Get someone in who knows what they're doing! At least let the author approve the narrator; I can't believe for a minute that Damien got through a couple of chapters without spilling his milk...

This series deserves a wider audience

Death Sentence is Book 6 in the Detective Inspector Nick Dixon series. The first novel in the series, As the Crow Flies, was not very good, But the quality improved with each novel until the most recent three have been outstanding 5 star murder mysteries. Napoleon Ryan's narration is consistently excellent.

Using Kindle Unlimited the first 5 books in the series, Kindle + Audible narration, are free to borrow. Without Kindle Unlimited but with Whispersynce for Voice, the books are $4 each for the Kindle and Audible versions combined. Death Sentence is a very recent release, so it is currently more expensive at $.734 for the Audible version.

I recommend this novel as well as all 6 novels in the series.

Deep, Dark, Death

Wow! Book Six in the DI Nick Dixon series is a riveting murder mystery that takes the listener underground to places that most humans would avoid at all costs. Underground cave systems with almost impassable areas that can only be navigated by swimming underwater, and steep narrow rock formations that threaten to pummel anybody that loses a foothold and goes crashing downward; that’s the terrifying scene of ONE of the murders. Trying to figure out the motive and what connects the victims, is a tall order for DI Nick Dixon and his team. His girlfriend, Jane Winter, now promoted and in a different precinct is facing her own issues, as she trains for her new position. Jane has also managed to find her birth mother, but is hesitant to contact her, unsure of all of the emotions she is feeling. As the death toll rises in the case, DI Nick Dixon is in a mad rush to stop the killer, as he makes connections to the past. Excellent story and superb conclusion!

Brilliant

I love Damien Boyd's mysteries! The plots are always intricate and captivating. I never know what's going to happen next or who did it or how Nick is going to figure it out. The characters are memorable and the narration is fantastic. Love love love.

Well told and narrated. I enjoy both the plots and the characters. Sometimes things go a bit silly - but overall a series worth following.

Great book and awesome narration..

This is my 6 book of DI Nick Dixon and, overall, I’ve liked every book so far. I love Nick and Jane; they’re such a great twosome. Really like Louise, Lewis, Pearce and Dave. It’s always nice to see the same characters you’ve gotten used to in all the other stories.

This was a very good mystery, with several murders that were up to Dixon to solve, and for the readers to wonder about “who dunnit,” all the way until almost the end of the book.

I was about to worry that this might get too involved with “caving” like the first one did with “rock climbing,” leaving me totally lost as to what was being talked about. But this one wasn’t so bed. I understood the caving lingo better than the rock climbing. I will admit that I would never, ever be interested in caving, especially not in the wintertime; all the ice cold water underground and the darkness. Nope, definitely not for me.

This does have swearing and the F-bomb was used 29 times. No romance whatsoever!

As to the narrator: Perfect! Napoleon Ryan does an awesome job. Not only with the emotional reading but the voices, too. All the men’s voices are great but I love Dixon’s best. And the women sound exactly like women. I could listen to him read any kind of book, all day long.
