Summary

Marnie Baranuik is back, and this time, the Great White Shark of psychic investigations has "people skills" and a new assistant who seems to harbor an unhealthy curiosity about Harry, her revenant companion. Together, they've got a whole lot of questions that need answering. Is an ancient vampire hunting in Denver? Who is stalking Lord Dreppenstedt? How do you cure a slipper-humping bat, ditch an ogre, or give a demon king the slip? And what the hell was she thinking swearing off cookies? Teaming up with her sexual nemesis, Special Agent Mark Batten, and their long-suffering supervisor, Gary Chapel, Marnie discovers that vampire hunters aren't easy to rescue, secrets don't stay buried, and zombies sure are a pain in the ass to kill.

Hilarious paranormal adventure

I listen to a lot of books in the fantasy and paranormal genre and have been somewhat spoiled by the really good authors like Patricia Briggs and Ilona Andrews. I'm a bit reluctant to try out new (to me) writers because although there are a lot of competent writers in this genre I've "heard it all before". However A.J. Aalto is now right at the top of my favourites list with Patricia, Ilona, Faith Hunter and Thea Harrison. In fact I would even say her writing is technically better. She's a writer who obviously loves words and her word choices, metaphors and descriptions made me "prick up my ears" in literary pleasure. However her writing doesn't slow down or get in the way of the story itself. The story is well paced with plenty of action, but with lulls in it where we can get to know the characters in much more depth. It's nice to have a main character, Marnie, who's disorganised, clumsy and a bit of a coward. Her swearing and obsession with sex makes for absolutely laugh out loud listening. As an (I presume) American writer, A.J. Aalto also did an excellent job with Harry, Marnie's English vampire housemate. As a U.K. listener I often cringe at highly stereotyped British characters or clumsy attempts at using British slang. And Amy McFadden also did an excellent job of his upper crust English accent along with bringing all the other characters vividly to life. Her characterisation and brilliant timing made a really funny book hilarious. If you like this genre, and don't mind quite explicit sex scenes and absolutely foul language, I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Not as good as the first

Another interesting challenge for MJ and her cohorts, however some of the tropes of the first book e.g. Lusting after, but never having, Mark; her internal "point" system and "don't think of his (insert male anatomy item here)" rhetoric grate more than they did in the first book, possibly because none of her personal relationships develop any farther. Still a fun, light diversion though.

So good but one annoying thing

love this series, brilliant plots. lots of twists, the characters are developing nicely. The annoying thing is acting annoyingly dense to the point you would be in the right to leave her to collect a Darwin award. A phone call rasping gurgling voice, speaking in French. 1st thing to do grab as yet pointless notebook! Not ask Harry who is Next to you to listen and translate!!! Then decides wrong number I'll forget it !! Rasping gurgling urgent voice, in obvious distress!!
