Summary
A French philanderer gets his comeuppance in Edinburgh, but which, if any, of his spurned lovers sealed his fate? Dead of Night is the third book by Robert McNeill to feature Detective Inspector Jack Knox.
A lecturer is killed and dumped in the Union Canal.
When DI Jack Knox investigates his past, he discovers a long list of old flames. Quite the lothario, the victim left several pining women and jealous husbands in his wake. There is no shortage of suspects. So, who put an end to the gigolo’s antics? Meanwhile DS Mason, Jack Knox’s fiancée and colleague, has problems of her own. Someone has vandalised her car and flat. She fears it is a disgruntled customer of Edinburgh’s finest, looking for revenge.
With these two cases, Knox is brought in front of his superiors following a complaint made against him. Will the top brass, once again, undermine the detective’s efforts at catching the killer? Or can Knox cut through the misinformation and bring them to justice?

Very enjoyable
I liked this novel, two unintwined threads both coming to a satisfying completion, no horrendous depiction of violence, no bad language as far as I can remember, just well written and as always with David Monteath well narrated. This is the third novel in Robert McNeill’s series featuring DI Jack Knox and I’ve enjoyed them all and look forward to number four. I like the fact that Knox isn’t a grim, drunken, foul mouthed detective as sadly so many fictional detectives seem to be in fiction and whilst I also enjoy darker novels featuring serial killers I do require a break from them. David Monteath I’ve loved listening to since he recorded the brilliant Sea Detective novels by Mark Douglas-Home then thank goodness the truly wonderful Dorothy Dunnett’s Lymond Chronicles.

Very good story again and the characters are becoming more interesting. David Monteath provides excellent narration.

A good listen
I enjoy listening to Robert McNeill books. There is something about knowing the areas of Scotland and following the street directions as the characters investigate the crimes. Great narration as always.

Another great detective novel.
I love this detective and imagine him to be tall, dark and very handsome....the background romance is a delight and best of all the writer does not use swearing every other word which is so prevalent these days. Highly recommended.

Brilliant
this is the fourth book and hopefully not the last in this series, I have enjoyed them all and highly recommend them. They have everything in them that a great detective story has. The narrator is one of my favourites and this book is his normal high standard. I hope another book will soon be published
