Summary

Melanie West is getting her life back on track after a messy divorce when her grandmother, Liza Harris, asks her to join her in opening a bed-and-breakfast inn. Together, Liza and Melanie purchase a purportedly haunted mansion on the Oregon coast and jump right into clearing out the cobwebs. But while attempting to remove wallpaper in an upstairs bedroom, the new B&B owners stumble upon a very real skeleton in their closet. The police suspect the skeleton is that of the wife of the previous owner of the B&B, but no one in town seems to want to say much about her.

As the inn owners try to juggle renovations with their own amateur investigations, their grand opening looms closer and closer - and a friendly ghost in their walls starts playing tricks. But it all comes crashing to a halt when a new body is found stabbed to death on the beach below the inn - the victim chillingly close in resemblance to Melanie herself. It seems someone doesn't appreciate newcomers prying into the small town's past, and now it's up to Melanie and Liza to get to the bottom of these murders to save their business - and their lives.

Not as bad as some reviews make out

Yes Liza’s accent is jarring, reminds me of when my gran would pick up the telephone! Broad geordie then as if by magic she turned into the queen! Weak story, But none the less just a lovely listen when tiding up.

Light and entertaining

Initially, I thought this book was for children by the way it was being read. I persisted and went on to enjoy the antics of Kate Kingsbury’s main characters, granddaughter and grandmother, Melanie and Liza, respectively. Tania Gilbert read the story well, using her great reading skills to keep you wondering and guessing which character is guilty of murder- twice over! I liked the way Kate Kingsbury described the location, too, so that the reader feels as though they are there, too! I will read the other books in this series, hopefully, quite soon. I can recommend this book as an enjoyable experience.

Nothing special but still enjoyable

Fairly enjoyable story, OK narration. This is basically an introduction to the characters and setting. Needed to be longer and more time spent on getting to know other people other than the 2 main characters. I didn't believe the love interest arc as it felt like she'd only spent about 10 mins in his company. Nevertheless I still wanted to find out whodunnit.

Couldn’t finish as narration so poor

I thought the storey was very good but it was spoilt by the poor narration, especially the English accent. Terrible. I couldn’t finish it but I’m going to buy the book.

Lovely frothy piece of escapism

After reading the reviews I was hesitant, but hey, it’s free ~ worth a shot. What I found was a lovely frothy piece of escapism, perfect to listen to when unwinding at the end of the day. Yes, it’s a bit predictable and far fetched, but that’s the genre ~ a bit of escapism. Yes, the reader starts off slightly over excited, but once she settles down she gives a warm and uplifting narration (definitely improved when she gave up attempting an English accent)! For me it deserves five stars. It’s a cosy mystery ~ does what it says on the tin, and does it well.

A Perfectly Cosy Murder Mystery

Kate Kingsbury is a new-to-me author. I enjoyed this charming story and liked the level of threat and danger our protagonists, Melanie and her grandmother Liza, found themselves in.

Is it unusual that I connected to Liza more than Melanie? I do love a female character with gumption! Max is a real sweetie, Ben's got book boyfriend potential, and I can't wait to find out about Orville's story.

I have listened to other books narrated by Tavia Gilbert and always enjoy her performances. I'm never confused who's speaking and enjoy the emotions Tavia brings to the scenes.

I already have audiobook 2 - Doom with a View - waiting to be listened to. I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures Melanie and Liza get drawn into next.

Easy listening

Although the plot was sometimes predictable, I enjoyed the story and the narrator made a good effort with the different character voices

Awful reader

Not a bad little story for a cosy mystery. Sadly rendered hard to listen to by the ghastly attempt at an English accent by the reader. If you're British, this might be too painful for you.
