Summary

Michael Valentine, veteran and former member of an elite private military company, has been recruited by the government to conduct a secret counter-terror operation in the Persian Gulf nation of Zubara. The unit is called Dead Six. Their mission is to take the fight to the enemy and not get caught. Lorenzo, assassin and thief extraordinaire, is being blackmailed by the world's most vicious crime lord. His team has to infiltrate the Zubaran terrorist network and pull off an impossible heist or his family will die. When Dead Six compromises his objective, Lorenzo has a new job: Find and kill Valentine. As allegiances are betrayed and the nation descends into a bloody civil war, Lorenzo and Valentine must face off. Two men. Two missions. Only one will win.

Dead brilliant

I read the first bit about three months ago and gave up, I was too busy with other things to understand who was who and got confused. Now I started the book in a two hour stint and everything fell into place. From then on it's been fantastic, Correia's humourous and fast-paced style (without the special gifts this time), in a realistic thriller setting that grips you by the throat and doesn't let go. Brilliant. I'm always stingy with the 5 stars but this book deserves it.

One of the best modern action novels ever

Not, going to lie... It took me a little while to get into this book. After about half an hour however, I was totally hooked. If you want to just sit back and enjoy a good old action romp, then this is the book for you. Nobody does action quite as well as Correia!

Some of the novels Correia has done in collaboration with other authors have been a bit flat and sub par, but these two seem to work well together. The story is interesting enough to keep you engaged, without being overly convoluted. The characters are well fleshed out and grow on you as the book progresses. The narrator does a good job for the most part but I found his voices for both the main characters a little too similar in places.

The best thing about the book is how well the action is written. It manages to immerse you into the action so feel like you are slap bang in the middle of it.

Worth binging

This is one of the best modern day tactical action books I have read in a looong time! The authors have a lot of practical knowledge in many of the subjects, which shows in their writing. The book follows the perspective of two persons, one is a mercenary and the other is a professional thief, and how their parts crosses in the small nation of Zubara. The country is on a swift spiral down into civil war, and we follow both men as they are drawn into a really interesting plot. Without giving anything away, there are some really unexpected turns that makes you really wonder what is coming next.

I have known about one of the authors a long time, but I had somehow missed this trilogy. But once I got started I more or less binged the three books. Get this, you won’t regret it!

Just Fine

Bronson Pinchot did a great job - which is good because l bought this title for his narration. His full, rich timbre was wielded perfectly and kudos to him for voicing everyone as written.

It was obvious that Kupari wrote one character's POV and Correia the other. I preferred Correia's characteristion, writing style and story. Kupari repeated plot points or made redundant call backs so l skimmed his chapters. However, both wrote female characters badly. The action is excellent but there is not enough plot or appealing characters to interest me in the sequels.
