Summary
He sought to flee his tragic past, but when Thomas Usher hears a clockwork voice on the phone, and sees ever-more disturbing visions in a derelict warehouse, Usher realises that he has to return home - for the sake of his own sanity. Meanwhile, a deadly figure from Usher's past threatens to undermine the very fabric of reality.
Gary McMahon’s short fiction has appeared in numerous acclaimed magazines and anthologies in the UK and US and has been reprinted in yearly "Best of" collections. Great story, great reader
I really enjoyed this book lot of details. I had a huge amount of things going on in it. I really enjoyed listening to the reader also. Great job all the way around.

If you like non gory, creative horror get this
I loved the imaginative story and dream like horror. Worth it.
It was sometimes a little bit gross (character wise) and I mean that in a good way too. Well done

When things go bad...they REALLY go bad!
Always a fan of Jay Villiers as a performer ( although some of his pronunciations are off, but I quibble ). The combination of his authoritative read and Gary McMahon's true gothic horror writing is powerful. I wasn't quite ready for it to be quite so gruesome, but the plot and characters certainly made up for some of the gratuitous scenes.
This was a freebie from AudioBookBoom's list. Highly recommended for horror fans.

Couldn’t finish
Thought I was getting a good scary story, but for me it ended up being too perverted. I just couldn’t get passed it and stopped listening.

An Interesting premise, wasted
While the premise is interesting, it's squandered by a narrative that can't decide on a perspective or tense. It's needlessly confusing and forces you to spend too much time figuring out whose eyes you're looking through.

I truly hope this writer is under lock and key
this is a perfect example of how sociopaths and psychopaths can exist on this Earth without actually killing people but still spew their awful awful brain activity out into the world I hope and pray he didn't have children

To clarify a few of the negative reviews...
1. That the narrator pronounces some things strangely: he has a non-American accent (English? I'm no linguist but I can recognize that words are pronounced differently around the world).
2. That the writer is deeply disturbed/a psychopath: its fiction; I have heard far more disturbing things from much more mainstream writers. If you want something PG, maybe avoid horror stories.
3. That it was hard to follow and hard to know who's point of view the story was being portrayed through: context. pay attention. its really quite easy to know which characters POV is being portrayed.
4. That there is too much detail and got boring: this has good character and plot development. Without it, the ending (which was well tied together) would have made no sense (ever taken on It or The Stand???)
This was a good story! After several years and hundreds of listens, I have never left this long of a review but I really feel the negative reviews were unfair. I personally feel this was well done. I felt connected to the protagonists (which is important to me to feel invested in the story line) and the ending tied up several loose ends in a way that was impressive and satisfying.
I hope this is a helpful review for anyone on the fence due to the negative reviews. Although it was included in my membership, I downloaded this to my expansive library and don't regret the investment of time.

Fabulous Tale Of Eldritch Pulp Horror
In the finest Weird Tales tradition of purple dramatic prose, Gary McMahon’s story plumbs the depths of speculative super natural depravity, an erudite fusion of Saki & Lovecraft in tone. Jay Villers’ narration brings this story of murder, sick, doomed need, & twisted paranormality into delightfully hideous life. Highly recommended.

Story and Narrator are great. Hope there's more!
Aside from a few unnecessarily descriptive sexual scenes, I loved this book.
The narrator is superb and he really fits as the main character's voice. I hope the author gives us more Usher tales with the same narrator because he is Usher in my opinion. I'd be happy with the Pilgrim making another appearance or 2 to try to mess things up as well. Actually, I would love a whole book of Thomas & Sarah's ghostly encounters with some more of Thomas's past thrown in for us. Everyone should try to listen to Pretty Little Dead Things first if possible-I loved it too. I wouldn't say he is scarier than Stephen King(as someone said) I would say he's a great storyteller with his own spooky style. It's always refreshing to listen to a good, original horror author.
Enjoy both stories in the dark if possible to give them that extra spooky feel🙂
