Summary
Landau, 1777: Scharfrichter Hieronymus Menges wird angeklagt, eine Hinrichtung ohne ordentliches Gericht abgehalten zu haben. Bei der Anhörung berichtet Menges von seiner Anwerbung durch zwei unbekannte Männer, der zweitägigen Kutschfahrt, dem Geheimgericht und der Hinrichtung, verliert jedoch kein Wort über den Grund der Hinrichtung. Auch eine Nacht im Käfigturm kann ihn nicht von seinem Schweigegelöbnis abbringen. Nachforschungen des Gerichts führen zu vier möglichen Hinrichtungsopfern. Eines davon ist die seit kurzem verschwundene Gräfin von Thurben, die des Mordes an ihrem Mann verdächtigt wird.
