Summary

From best-selling author Dean Koontz, a trilogy of original novellas, “Last Light”, “Final Hour”, and “Troubled Times”, about an extraordinary heroine - Makani Hisoka-O’Brien - a Southern California surfer and clairvoyant.

“Last Light”
Makani is a young woman with a good heart and the gift of touch - a troubling gift, and sometime curse, that separates her from others, from her family, friends, and lovers - a gift that makes her wary of casual contact. For when Makani touches others, their darkest thoughts and secret deeds are revealed to her. But her exile from the world at large comes to an end when she meets a “gifted” man with a talent of his own - a talent guided by a twisted soul. In a war of wills, only one will survive.

“Final Hour”
Makani saves a stranger from an accident in the park and experiences a most disturbing vision. With her friend Pogo, her dog Bob, and mere traces of information to guide her, Makani must track down two mysterious sisters - one of them innocent, one not.

“Troubled Times”
A friend reveals that he is under attack from a man with supernatural talents - a malevolent man with the power to manipulate time. The power was meant for good - to save humanity - but it was usurped by this man of insatiable greed and lust. Makani must use her gift, yet again, not only to save her friend, but the world as well. Has Makani finally met her match? Can her good heart stand up to such evil? Someone’s time is up, and only time will tell whose time that is.

disappointing but perhaps book 2 will be better.

I'm not keen on the short story type approach. perhaps it's a scene setting book for the next 2. I found the plot too predictable to really enjoy.

Sounds like an auto-read

I’m doubtful a real person read this and I gave up pretty quickly.

Within the first few minutes this sounded like someone fed a script through text to speech / it’s jumpy, short and uncomfortable.

First audible title I’ll ask for a credit back for.

A bit of a disappointment for this Dean Koontz fan

I'll start by saying I'm a big fan of Dean Koontz and have read many of his books over the last 3 (or 4?) decades. This represents a couple of firsts for me - my first experience of his short stories, and the first time I've listened to any of his work rather than read it.

I started out by listening to the sample to see if I liked the narrator's voice. I did, so I made my purchase. Unfortunately, what sounded fine in the sample, when spread over the whole audiobook, became very annoying. There was no inflection or performance in the narrative or in the voices of the characters. Every male voice was exactly the same, and sounded like what I would imagine a surfer dude in a Scooby Doo episode would sound like.

The short story format was interesting, and I'm not sure it really worked for these stories. They are the kind of stories DK normally makes into a full novel length, and there just wasn't the time and space to fill out the characters or build the plot, so it all felt a bit rushed and one-dimensional. I felt it worked better for the third story than the first two.

All in all, a bit of a disappointment.

DON'T BOTHER

Dean Koontz is one of my favourite authors but this book is awful. It might be because the narrator is so bad.

Worst narration I’ve ever heard.

Story is ok not one of Koontz best but I’m a fan and they can’t all be 5 stars. But the reader is just awful. What is she trying to do?
Sounds like she’s trying to do a very bad parody of “surfer dude”
I will try the written story as it may be better than I think just spoilt by the extremely bad reading.

Urrgghh

Love this author, I have enjoyed a fair few of his books but this is something else. The first 2 stories are actually pretty gripping but the 3rd one was so odd and silly I gave up. the main issue with this though is the narrator, I'm sorry but she is horrendous. so breathy and her different voices are laughable. only stuck with it as it was a cheap listen but it's really very poor.
