Summary

She read the contract. She knew the rules.

With enough money, you can buy anything. Our guests expect complete submission, and demand utter discretion.

We provide both, and have been doing so successfully for years.

Until Pearl came along. Seems the money wasn't enough for her in the end, not for the things we made her do for our guests. For us.

She wants out. But that's not how it works at the Fox Pit.

We've bought her. We own her.

She can resist us as much as she wants; but out here, no one can hear her screams.

Dark Rapture is a harrowing epic dark romance that may trigger listeners. Proceed with caution.

Wow

Captivating!
I have enjoyed listening to this book. It’s intriguing, captivating, sexy and your able to get lost in the world of the Fox Pit.
I couldn’t stop listening to this only turning off when I had to.
If you like striking characters with differing personalities, you’ll enjoy this book.
Narration is easy to listen to drawing you in and enabling you to envisage the scenes.
Great book. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable

Having been used to dual dialogue, I didn't think I was going to enjoy listening to this but I was really pleased, it was narrated quite well and having not read it before, it was new for me.

Good Erotica First Half, But The Rest Not So Much

This story is mostly erotica with some mystery and some paranormal. The story had a good flow for the first half and then went totally off the rails. The book dragged on as if the author wasn't sure where they were headed in the plot and then the last 10 hours of the book was bizarre. I had a hard time keeping up with all the changes in the character’s name and what was real or not real. It really should be split into three books.

I also found the ending to be totally ridiculous and it really minimized the trauma that Pearl endured. I think the author played it too safe with the ending. Seriously, I doubt a sex slave would be all ready to jump back in the sack after what she went through.

I really think the author needs to decide who their audience is. If its women, then he should learn what turns women on with erotica. All of the "liquidy" descriptions were cringy and geared for men. On a somewhat positive there were some hot sex scenes minus all the “liquidy” descriptions.

The narrator was ok but slurring in some parts and not when the character was intoxicated. The only voice male voice I liked was Tanner.

Overall, it was too long and too confusing. If you like erotica, you will probably enjoy the first half of the book before it goes off into crazy town.

3.5* - mis-categorized on Amazon

According to the 'Product Details' portion of the Amazon page for this book, Dark Rapture is categorized as:
#635 in Books > Teens > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Science Fiction > Time Travel
#750 in Books > Audible Audiobooks > Fiction & Literature > Horror
#1196 in Books > Audible Audiobooks > Romance > Suspense

Ooookay. Not sure how this book fits into any of these three categories. Let's be clear - it's a thriller/suspense story in the BDSM/erotica category. Mis-categorizing this book is one (but not the only) reason why the reviews are mixed. Readers/listeners form an expectation based on book information and when those expectations aren't met, this dissonance tends to be reflected in the reviews.

As other reviewers have noted, this books skews heavily towards erotica for most of the story, with the suspense-thriller plot ramping up in the latter portion of the book. So, if you're more interested in the dark suspense aspects of the story, you'll need patience and a willingness to get immersed into Pearl's experiences and her journey (it's a long journey, covering over 30 hours of audiobook). Also as other reviewers have noted, the ending gets a bit surreal and may require some re-reading to absorb. Could it have been a shorter book? Definitely. But any reader who purchases a book that is this long should reasonably be willing to invest the time so that they can become immersed in the story. Given the genre, it's not necessarily a pleasant immersion, but it certainly helps us appreciate Pearl's condition by the time the final scenes arrive. I don't regret investing that time.

I really liked the narrator's voice. Subjectively speaking, I prefer female narrators with alto voices (versus soprano voices) and Ms. Cyr's voice is authentically Pearl. I didn't enjoy all of her male voices, though, which is why I dropped a star for the narration rating. Also, I sped up the playback speed slightly - it reduced the overall playback time and the pace flowed a bit better (my opinion). I'd absolutely listen to another audiobook by this author or this narrator in the future.

Do not read this book alone at night

A disturbing Book for a disturbing era........ well what is more disturbing then having Donald Trump as President ?

It takes awhile to heat up but it gets very very hot.

The Narrator does a great job working with difficult material to bring this strange story to the listener.

To those who enjoy this genre it is a creative and interesting experience.

This book is not a romance!

If you’re wanting a true dark romance, pick something else. There isn’t a true Hero, in this book. The Heroine has several sexual partners that she starts to have a hopeful attachment to, although this attachment does not drive her to want to be monogamous. Only one of her sexual partners has any romantic attachment to her. A couple of her male counterparts, do harbor a bit of an unhealthy obsession of her, nothing more. This Heroine is emotionally scarred and has a dark past that she attempts to just selectively forget. She does not, and doesn’t want to, acknowledge, process and overcome her personal demons. She believes that if you pretend and not talk about an unpleasant event, in your past, then it really didn’t happen. My point is, Although you may want to route for this “Heroine’s” escape from her current confinement, this is not a character that you truly like or respect; it’s a character you just pity.

Did I enjoy this book? This is hard to answer. I was compelled to continue to listen. There were many crazy events and characters that I wanted figure out so I kept listening, with rapt attention, searching for clues in hopes of solving the mystery; I failed. So, in this regard, the book was well written; I kept listening for hours. This novel was definitely not predictable. Unfortunately, it was confusing as hell. It seemed like the author just kept throwing in ridiculous “clues” to ensure the reader/listener wouldn’t be able to figure out what the heck was going on; this ploy was successful.

Unfortunately, and the reason my rating was so low, was that the author never clears up the confusion. She never revels what was really going on. She just ends the book, leaving more questions than answers. It’s almost like the author couldn’t figure out how to collect all the crazy events and write a reveal that makes any sense. Therefore, I was left thinking, WTF? There were no answers to my questions. There was also no final explanation of what happened to any of the antagonists. Who lived and who died? (Never answered) What did the police investigation reveal?(never answered). Did the Heroine finally seek professional help to sort out the horrifying events of her past?( Who knows?) were any of the missing bodies found? ( never revealed)my final feeling, on this novel was , “YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME, THAT’S IT?” “WHAT A COMPLETE WASTE OF 30 HOURS!” “ I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT NOT A SINGLE REVIEWER BOTHERED TO MENTION THAT THIS 30 HOUR “NOVEL” ENDS WITH AN UNRESOLVED CLIFFHANGER!”

😡😡😡SO, HERE’S ME DOING MY FELLOW AUDIO BOOK JUNKIES A FAVOR, UNLESS YOU WANT TO CREATE A CONCLUSION YOURSELF, DONT EVEN DOWNLOAD THIS BOOK!😡😡😡😡

Dark Rapture

This is the first book I've read (or listened to) by this author, and overall, I thought this was a good story. Maybe it's because it is such a long story, but I did feel that it was kind of slow to start. It took a little longer to pull me in. There were multiple times when I went days in a row without listening. However, once the secrets, twists, danger, and mystery came out I didn't want to stop listening because I had to know what was going on and what was going to happen next. One reviewer described the second half as bizarre. I agree, there were parts that were a little bizarre, but that's what kept my interest. I was a little disappointed in the ending just because I felt there were a few questions left unanswered for me. I did like Pearl. She was a strong character mentally and emotionally, as well as a fighter when she needed to be.

As for the narration, I thought Ms. Cyr did a great job. I tend to not listen to many audiobooks when there is only one narrator. For me, one narrator makes it easier to get lost (and not in a good way) in the storyline. After a time, the variation in voice tends to blend together. With over 30 hours, I expected that would definitely happen here. I am happy to report that it did not though. I would definitely listen to another story with this narrator.

dark

This was an amazingly dark, erotic, mind twist of a romance read. So well written and narrated. I was immediately captured by the story line and the story line kept changing as I listened. Characters were great, Fox knows how to spin a tale for sure! Just when I thought I knew what was going on and what was going to happen the rug got ripped out from under me (in the best possible way).

*If dark erotic is not your thing or if you have triggers this may not be the read for you.

Overall 4☆ Performance 5☆ Story 3 ☆

This was an extremely long audio. I had trouble hearing it while on my motorcycle so it took forever for me to finish listening to it. I tried to read it on my Kindle, but I think the story was changed a bit because there were differences in the two versions. I decided just to listen as I could in a cage/vehicle.

The first part was great. But then weird paranormal stuff started happening and it brought the story down. Mostly because it made no sense. There wasn't anything to explain. At the end, we were just left hanging after a really long drawn out gruesome scene. The romance part was disappointing. There wasn't enough of Pearl and Greg at the end to endure one to them as a couple. This is not my normal read, so maybe I missed something. But unneeded parts seemed to be drawn out and crucial parts left out to leave me unsatisfied.

Kaiya Cyr was excellent. She performed each part wonderfully with so much emotion. I really liked listening to her voice. She took her time and that maybe part of the reason the book is so long.

Between the performance and receiving this book as a gift, I finished it.

Dark and intense!

This has been a long story to listen to, but soooo worth it. The characters and storyline draws you in and leaves you begging to know what’s going to happen next. I’ve laughed, cried, and wanted to scream so many times throughout the story but the tears, especially at the end, were most definitely worth it.

WOW, Dark and Erotic

This audiobook was well presented. I got very involved in the story. It is about Pearl, a striper who get involved with an organization to earn money and what happens to her along the way. This story is not for the faint of heart. Hardcore sex acts and so much more in this book series. I really liked everything but the very end, the epilogue.

Not what I expected

The blurb was intriguing but the reality left me cold. It is an extreme rarity that I complain about a book being too long but at times this one seemed ENDLESS!!! If you are like me in the beginning the author's elaborate descriptions will seem appealing but chapter after chapter of it had my own eyes rolling and sighs of boredom and frustration passing my lips. As for Pearl, the main character, my emotions bounced back and forth from just not caring, active dislike and you've got to be kidding me. I know that I was supposed to feel bad for her and occasionally I did. But nobody is going to get paid 100 grand for thirty days without earning every single cent of it, one way or another. She didn't go into the situation totally clueless, even though sometimes I felt she acted like she did. The story was twisted, dark and yes, suspenseful. Unfortunately, I thought that it wavered between being too much and yet, providing too little to be satisfying. The story went places I didn't expect. I went in expecting an erotic, romantic suspense and it was that, but other elements were added that took things in other directions. I don't know. Maybe it was just me, but this book simply didn't work for me. I was not a fan of the narrator. Her reading only added to the monotony.
