Summary
An isolated Swedish town. A deaf reporter terrified of nature. A dense spruce forest overdue for harvest. A pair of eyeless hunters found murdered in the woods.
It's week one of the Swedish elk hunt, and the sound of gunfire is everywhere. When Tuva Moodyson investigates the story that could make her career, she stumbles on a web of secrets that knit Gavrik town together.
Are the latest murders connected to the Medusa killings 20 years ago? Is someone following her? Why take the eyes? Tuva must face her demons and venture deep into the woods to stop the killer and write the story. And then get the hell out of Gavrik.

Blown Away
The first thing that struck me was the performance of the narrator Mars Lindh. Her accent and cadence was beautiful, even lyrical. The second thing that struck me was the fact that the book was written in the first person. That and the short, incredibly detailed sentences. My whole attention was captured immediately and then as the story began to unfold I had to keep in listening because I simply had to know what happened next. Excellent all round. I hope to see more from both the author and narrator.

extremely addictive.
Written in a first person narrative in real time as events occur. This means that you only learn of events when the main character does. I don't know if it's because it is set in Sweden that it reminds me of dragon tattoo. Anyhow to the story there is no cut and thrust, or massive twist / blind side events. The whole thing relies on the shear quality of the writing and the prose. This it does with exceptional consistency. I devoured this book with whisper sync so had the pleasure of both reading and listening, I have to say that in both formats this is an addictive delight. The way the words just flow is superb. The characters are really well developed drawing you in. The book is narrated by a Swedish actress in English this really adds to the effect of being 1st person written as if a diary. Just an fantastic piece of work and a cannot wait for the next book.

Great characters and atmosphere
Ok so I loved all the remote sinister forest stuff and the eccentric, creepy characters that live in it. For me it has distant echoes of Hansel and Gretel. The minor beef I have is with the main character. I am British and over here journalists are not really noble, truth seekers who want to what is right for society. They are motivated by financial reward and the feeling of being at the centre of what is happening. They are on a par with Estate Agents or used car sales staff. Consequently I found it hard to believe in this character or the other characters willingness to trust and help her by talking with her. The other problem I have with her is she doesn't behave in a particular sensible/intelligent fashion when confronted with dangerous situations, particularly towards the end. This is not consistent with a top rated journalist. If she carries on in this vein, the laws of probability suggest she will die young. The other characters are all fascinating and very well formed. They more than make up for my niggles with the main character. If you enjoy character driven novels, I would suggest this is worth a try.

Finishes strongly
There's an elegance to the storytelling that reveals itself only slowly. Keep with it and you'll find yourself listening for longer in each sitting. Each character is introduced, with all their weirdness and red-necked foibles, and you find yourself pondering who the murderer is between listens. Straightforward scenes that move the plot forward are interspersed with dreamlike moments such as the one where Tuva wanders deep into the forest leaving red thread tailing behind her. Nature is ever present, dark, claustrophobic but also beautiful. Tuva is our anti-hero - a city girl at heart who seeks to overcome her deafness and fear of the forest. This is a story about her personal growth and resilience as much as it is a murder mystery. As Tuva comes to understand the strange world of rural Sweden she finds herself in, so she comes nearer and nearer to uncovering the truth.

Very good indeed
Well written and beautifully performed. I think most people will guess “whodunnit” and in that respect I think the ending could have been more exciting had the narrative broken from the first person to confirm the murderer’s identity to the reader and had us rooting for the hero as the book reaches its climax. But this is a minor niggle (and personal opinion) about a book that was a brilliant travelling companion on a long journey.

Mesmerising, intriguing and beautifully told
This is an unusual and evocative book told entirely from the perspective of the central character who is credible and interesting. I felt completely swept up into her world. The descriptive style is as detailed but crisp as the Swedish weather - almost staccato at times - and the lyrical voice of the narrator perfectly suited it. I felt I could see and feel and taste everything. I don’t know if it presents an authentic picture of deafness but it certainly felt like it did without lapsing into cliche. The plot and characters were expertly woven and drawn. I devoured it in a weekend and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Brilliantly Written and Read
Will Dean has created a memorable character in a memorable setting dealing with memorable murders. That's right, you won't forget this one after you read it. Tuva Moodyson is a deaf, small-town reporter with more than her fair share of hang ups. With that kind of protagonist, it might be tempting for an author to slip into easy cliches, but Dean never does. Instead, he delivers a compelling but flawed hero who has you pulling for her with each step in those dark pines. Dean also provides an interesting gallery of murder suspects who range from the subtle to the bizarre and the result is wonderfully entertaining. Maya Lindh's narration brings Tuva to life in a five-star performance that's filled with personality.
