I am so pleased to have discovered this series. The characters are warm and likeable and the descriptions of Nuala bring the place and the period vividly to life. The stories are well written and I enjoyed the audible narration.
There is an elegiac quality about the end of empire feel - endings and new beginnings. Inspector De Silva seems to combine these things and I enjoy his and Jane's company.
I thoroughly recommend the series.

The characters are very stereotyped despite the mixed race marriage of the inspector and his wife, so do not allow for a challenging plot. The setting is interesting and gives some good insights into Colonial behaviour.
The storyline needs you to remember what happens at the beginning in Australia and is probably intended to instill some tension. I had forgotten what had happened so the drama was not as dramatic as it should have been.
There are some good descriptions and humour.
The narration was good in parts but the voices grated. My recording was very poor and often muffled when the narrator lowered his voice for effect. A fatal flaw for listeners. Actors are taught how to portray emotions but keep the same level of decibels.
So why did I finish the book and order others in the series? I actually warmed to these characters and want to know more about them.

Good ideas let down by poor presentation but worth listening to
