Summary
Edinburgh, 1820s. On one side is the Old Town; ancient, crumbling, and full of poverty. On the other is the New Town - elegant, refined, and prosperous.
When newly qualified Doctor Martin Elliot arrives, he discovers that the duality goes deeper. There is more darkness in the streets than he could have imagined. Ghosts of the long-dead haunt the houses, and nightmares soon fill Martin’s head.
Only a relic of the past - a dark, carved staff - seems to give Martin respite. But can be balance its power with the burden that comes with it, or will evil overcome his good intentions?
Dark Capital is a stand-alone novel, and can be enjoyed even if you haven't listened to other books in the series.

Fascinatingly Dark
I wasn’t too sure what to expect with this book going into it. I’m a fan of Georges narration from another series I listen to and that’s how I found this book. In the end, as an Edinburgh native myself I just had to listen to this and imagine the setting with the historic sites I know of my homeland.
I was NOT disappointed. The story here is very gothic in tone, one which suits old Edinburgh very well. I loved the time setting, the pacing was excellent and the characters were very well formed. I really enjoyed the journey at play here as well as the history to be told. Edinburgh, even today, is a very history proud city and we get glimpses of that pride in history through this book with the character of Sandy.
The dark twist to the story itself leaves you feeling satisfied throughout. Yes there are paranormal themes but looking at those alone, there’s still a hint of realising where you could associate their affects to someone having mental health issues. I really enjoyed its grounding in reality - especially considering that Edinburgh has a huge paranormal association. It was wonderfully written and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey of this book.
George Ellington as narrator was fantastic as always. He puts so much into each performance, characters always have different voices. The effort he puts into his narration is plain for all to see. George is one of my favourite narrators and that’s because he deserves that position. Very well spoken, has that kick to his accent and very easy to listen to narrating a phone book I’m sure!
I really enjoyed this book and can’t recommend it enough if you want a reality based spooky story!

A very gothic tale
This is a strange story of a man's fall from grace, not quite what I was expecting but an enjoyable listen nonetheless, Martin Elliot starts the story as a newly qualified Doctor with ideas of how he will treat the sick, poor and rich alike, very philanthropic ideas, however, he moves into the wrong abode and things quickly start to go wrong. It is not, however, what I would call a horror story so be aware that it is more of a cautionary tale than one of horror.
It does very much have the feel of a real Gothic tale, I recommend it on that alone, Ms Swift has done a great job there, and Mr Ellington's narration is marvellous throughout.
I was lucky enough to receive a free review copy, and the above is my honest opinion of what I heard.

The evil Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
With Dr. Morton Elliott is looking for lodgings in Edinburgh, he chooses one with the cheapest rent. Despite the people outside try to persuade him not to. He quickly blows them off and moves in disregarding every warning from everyone he knows personally and just walking down the street. He finds an old walking staff while moving in and quickly adopted as a soul. Despite the nightmares and increasing evil side creeping on Dr. Elliott he refuses to rid himself of the walking staff and even his betrothed can tell something is changing within him. Before it is said and done Dr. Elliot has become the worst version Open himself that he could’ve became or is it him at all? This book is so so good. Once I started reading it I really could not stop, one page lead you to the next page and then the next chapter and then before I knew it I was finished. I didn’t know this was from The Dark series and now I can’t wait to read the other two books in the collection. Not to mention my favorite narrator George Ellington, he did a phenomenal job in this book. Probably because he is from Scotland. It seems I am always running into his books and I am always excited when I do. Him and I will say of the same taste in books because it seems if he reads it I like it and I definitely like his narration he’s so awesome! Maybe I am fan Girling way too much so I will end it here and say I highly recommend this book it’s totally worth the credit.
