Summary

Maelea is an average 11-year-old living in Anlong Veng, Cambodia. Her days consist of fishing in the Mekong River with her father, watching her younger sister Srey, cooking with her mother, and dancing joyfully throughout the hut.

When her sister becomes ill with dengue fever and the family worries she will die, her father journeys to the city in search of help. He returns with a doctor and a mysterious woman whom he tells Maelea she will now work for as a domestic servant.

Maelea is promised a door to a better future, including school, but finds herself trapped in a brothel instead. There she endures unimaginable torture, isolation, and is forced to sell her body up to 60 times a night for two years until one horrific act of terror becomes an unlikely saving grace.

Dance For Me is an honest and compassionate look into child sex trafficking. It will make you angry, it will make you sad, and it will inspire you to act for those who you cannot.

Hard read/listen

This was a good book don't get me wrong. However it took me a while to read because it made me sick and depressed every time I listened to it. The things this poor girl went through is just horrible. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon story. Thousands of young girls and boys are trafficked every day. Not just in other countries but the US as well. Natalie thank you for sharing your story.

Great narration. Horrific book.

Once past the first few chapters, it became difficult to listen to more than a chapter or 2 at a time. What the girl endured, was so hard to listen too. Every convicted pedophile should be forced to listen to these child abuse stories to realize the damage they are doing. The children forced to work in brothels, clearly have hellish lives, more so than I ever would have imagined. I think of the documentaries I have seen, those where American men travel to Cambodia to have sex with children. They should all be castrated with no trial and no rights. What kind of God would allow this?

haunting but beautifully told

I was a little bored in the beginning but I came to find the overactive and still childlike telling of the story to be the most compelling part as we dive deeper into territory no child should ever even have to imagine... the narrator was a great pick! the voice sounds like it could be the one of story teller,.

it was okay....

narrator was great and I really did feel like I was there listening to the little girl. I feel terrible for what she had to go through but even being a victim of trafficking myself, I just couldn't get it.

Remember this is fiction

The story is gripping and horrifying. The young girl narration makes the situation come alive.

Avoiding spoilers there are several events in the book that are physically impossible. Suspend disbelief and see the horror of trafficking.

I will never reread the story, nor will I likely forget it.

This is a book that most adults should read, once.

Horrific!

I feel like the dad knew what he was doing, where she was going!
Many young girls have stories like this.
It's sickens me that humans would treat other humans let alone a child with such abuse, torture! These are vile people who deserve no mercy if and when caught!

Unimaginable horror for these children

Every one of these stories I listen to about trafficking just makes me sick. Just makes me wish I could become some ultimate hero and find all the lost children who are enduring this God-awful world. Heartwrenching story told very well. My heart hurts for all children (and adults) that are forced into this world. A disgusting reality that's happening world wide.

Heartbreaking but reality.

Narrator was fantastic! Story is heart wrenching & truly makes you realize how some people could just be so cruel. So sad that anyone, much less children are trapped and must endure this everyday. Well written & told & I couldn’t stop listening.
