Summary
In spring a young man’s fancy will turn to love, and the Honorable Phillip Petrie is no exception. Daisy’s chum is totally smitten with Miss Gloria Arbuckle, daughter of a millionaire Yank. But before the enthusiastic suitor can pop the question, his beloved is abducted. As a distraught Mr. Arbuckle begins assembling the ransom, Phillip enlists Daisy to help him recover his missing sweetheart.

Again spoilt by dreadful narration.
Why, oh why, could publishers not get a British narrator that can pronounce English place names etc correctly. What would be an enjoyable book to listen to is spoilt by so many inaccuracies.

The Narrator DOES get the hang of ENGLISH. Almost.
Great Story, I am glad that I had another try in the series - I Like the Daisy Dalrymple Mysteries. I left a review on the previous book when they first changed Narrator. The narration was JARRING then, to say the least! I said then in that review that I hope the narrator gets a decent producer to correct her mistakes for the next one - or gets into her stride....
This American narrator has taken a while to get the hang of English pronunciations HOWEVER she appears to have got the hang of it MOSTLY in this book. WORTH HANGING IN THERE FOR.
Obviously place names are still incorrect - vowels are often wobbly but about half way through one stops shouting at the speaker and correcting. Couldn't help myself for Worcester and Gloucester but maybe they are hard to say??

Enjoyable story. Dreadful narration.
You have to work hard to concentrate on the story with the terrible pronunciation grating. Not bothering to find out how any place names are said is pretty rude. The mangled cockney and Welsh dialects were painful. Glad this was a freebie.

Very enjoyable
Very good story in this excellent series. Having gotten accustomed to Americanised English narration I’ll happily continue with the entire series.

Love these stories
I love these stories, but the narrator is terrible. I have no idea what accent she is trying to put on but its not english in the 1920s.
Such a shame as the books really are very easy to listen to!

The Famous Five For Adults
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Daisy Dalyrmple, the 'spiffing' heroine has a friend in a spot of bother again. It is a similar formula of love, larks and lurking menace. This time, however, it is Daisy's chums who are the first on the scene to help foil a dangerous group of cockneys and a yank who have kidnapped the new love interest of bumbling and lovable Philip. Alec, Daisy's own love and Chief Inspector is kept in the dark, due to a promise made, for the first part as police involvement is feared. The plot and group of characters made me think of famous five novels and I half expected to hear someone call for lashings and lashings of ginger beer.
It is generally an easy listen; a cosey crime with some romance and period glamour. The male voices could have been more convincing but the overall affect was good. If you enjoy a mystery with a lighter side this one may suit you to a T.
Could you see Damsel in Distress being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?
With the success of period and mystery dramas I can see this series of books made into a successful drama series for TV. I would particularly like it if the makers of a TV series allowed the deliciously popular Daisy as much of the honey-haired, English and 'unfashionably curvy' qualities as possible. There are few curvy actresses, especially British 'bright young things'. Maybe Rachel Hurd Wood with her grace and beauty, if she ate a few doughnuts, or Jemima Rooper, who could do the vivacious character credit.

great storyline, appalling narration
Please use English Narrators or at least people familiar with England. The 1920s setting is completely lost amongst mispronounced place names and bad intonation. Shame!

Daisy at her best
Shame about the appalling pronunciation of the narrator. Obviously never heard how the upper classes really speak. And her pronunciation of Gloucester made you wince! But I love the Carola Dunn books and will even put up with Mia’s awful narration to listen to all 26 books in chronological order while I sit crafting. This is my 4th time round!
