A CIA officer and his recruit arrive in Damascus to hunt for a killer.

There is no question that this story was well researched and written. Unfortunately, the pace of the narration was uneven and in the critical early chapters when characters and plot were being established it was so fast that it became difficult to follow. Such a pity.

I’m ordering more of his books. Pacey read and well read. Although a lot of unfamiliar names to remember.

I loved the book but gave up at the half way point to start again with the ebook. The narration really didn’t do it for me. No energy and so vanilla that I struggled to stay tuned in and therefore to keep up with the plot.

This is a story about the early days of the war in Syria when the USA still had an embassy in Damascus. Initially I thought it was going to follow the events that occurred at that time, but soon realised that the plot was deviating quite significantly from the real situation. At first I found the characters rather unconvincing, but as the story proceeded I found them more believable. There are some explicit torture scenes that some readers may find hard to take, and possibility the author could have toned these down. Also there are a couple of deaths, particularly of female characters, which could have been omitted and would have made the story less harrowing. However, that having been said I found the book entertaining and the narrator well suited to the story he was reading.
