This mesmerizing, surreal account of the bizarre adventures of Terence McKenna, his brother Dennis, and a small band of their friends, is a wild ride of exotic experience and scientific inquiry. Exploring the Amazon Basin in search of mythical shamanic hallucinogens, they encounter a host of unusual characters - including a mushroom, a flying saucer, pirate Mantids from outer space, an appearance by James and Nora Joyce in the guise of poultry, and translinguistic matter - and discover the missing link in the development of human consciousness and language.

We are in the midst of a powerful psychedelic renaissance. After four decades of hibernation, the promise of the psychoactive 60s - that deeper self-awareness, achieved through reality-bending substances and practices, will lead to greater external harmony - is again gaining a major following. The signs are everywhere, from the influence of today's preeminent psychedelic thinker Daniel Pinchbeck, to the renewed interest in the legacy of Terence McKenna, and to the upsurge of collective cultural phenomena like the spectacle of Burning Man.

The most influential religious historian of the 20th century, Huston Smith, once referred to it as the "best-kept secret" in history. Did the Ancient Greeks use drugs to find God? And did the earliest Christians inherit the same, secret tradition? A profound knowledge of visionary plants, herbs, and fungi passed from one generation to the next? The Immortality Key is a groundbreaking dive into the role psychedelics have played in the origins of Western civilization, and the real-life quest for the Holy Grail that could shake the Church to its foundations.

When LSD was first discovered in the 1940s, it seemed to researchers, scientists and doctors as if the world might be on the cusp of psychological revolution. It promised to shed light on the deep mysteries of consciousness, as well as offer relief to addicts and the mentally ill. But in the 1960s, with the vicious backlash against the counter-culture, all further research was banned. In recent years, however, work has quietly begun again on the amazing potential of LSD, psilocybin and DMT. Could these drugs in fact improve the lives of many people?

In Drug Use for Grown-Ups, he draws on decades of research and his own personal experience to argue definitively that the criminalization and demonization of drug use - not drugs themselves - have been a tremendous scourge on America, not least in reinforcing this country's enduring structural racism. Dr. Hart did not always have this view. He came of age in one of Miami's most troubled neighborhoods at a time when many ills were being laid at the door of crack cocaine. His initial work as a researcher was aimed at proving that drug use caused bad outcomes.

No other monument in the world evokes mystery like the Great Sphinx of Giza. It has survived the harsh climate of Egypt for thousands of years. According to orthodox Egyptology, the Sphinx was built around 2500 BCE as a memorial to the pharaoh Khafre. Yet this “fact” has scant to no supportive evidence. When was the Sphinx really built and, most importantly, why? In this provocative collaboration, two Egyptology outsiders combine their decades of research to show how the Sphinx is thousands of years older than the conventional Egyptological timeline.

Story
In this anthology, edited by best-selling author Graham Hancock, 22 writers illuminate the topic of psychedelics and consciousness like never before. Travel to South America, the American Southwest, outer space, inner space, and back in time to revisit Pahnke's The Good Friday experiment. Explore the effects of ayahuasca, LSD, and much more.
Summary
From 1990 to 1995, Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. government–approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected 60 volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences. Many reported convincing encounters with intelligent nonhuman presences, aliens, angels, and spirits. Nearly all felt that the sessions were among the most profound experiences of their lives. Strassman's research connects DMT with the pineal gland, considered by Hindus to be the site of the seventh chakra and by René Descartes to be the seat of the soul.
DMT: The Spirit Molecule makes the bold case that DMT, naturally released by the pineal gland, facilitates the soul's movement in and out of the body and is an integral part of the birth and death experiences, as well as the highest states of meditation and even sexual transcendence. Strassman also believes that so-called alien abduction experiences are brought on by accidental releases of DMT. If used wisely, DMT could trigger a period of remarkable progress in the scientific exploration of the most mystical regions of the human mind and soul.

Open your mind!
Whilst the first half of this audio was a little technical and dry, the sound basis for the trials and research described become necessary to understand the book.
An outstanding and brave work, which describes and theorises on altered states, and demands the readers open minded thought.
Strange though, that no comparisons to Robert Munroes "Journeys out of the body" were included. Some of the descriptions and conclusions came rather close to it, I felt.
An excellent audio book for the Psychonaut or the curious.

Amazing life long dedication
It feels after Rene Desecrate Prof Strassman is the next person in history who has fallen in love with Pineal gland. Psychedelics, or domains of consciousness or parallel reality or related debates are all incorporated into this account. Nonetheless it’s a very honest account of a researcher who is trying to accomplish a well planned research but had a really tough time over many years. On one side it’s positive that people could do brain lobotomy or prescribe Thalidomide to pregnant women only a century ago within case system but on the other wised this poor researcher has spent his life time to accomplish to what according to at least him was innocent and simple in experimental settings. It’s a ruthless honest account of personal experience, if there is an embarrassment it’s been shared, if it’s a failure it’s been highlighted if it has been a betrayal it’s been described. Hierarchy and politics in high level Buddhist establishment is a unique aspect shared from personal point of view. Prof Strassman lets hope to meet in another domain of reality at some point 😀

A bookend to the most profound experience I’ve ever had.
You can almost feel the author undergoing his own non DMT induced transition as he writes. As in, the experiences he supervised and recorded seemingly forcing him to reassess his own belief systems in a similar way to the volunteers. A highly recommendable read, not only to anyone that’s undergone a transcendent experience with DMT, but to anyone who’s ever pondered, if even for a moment and asked ‘why?’

Interesting Insight to DMT
Whilst I understand the mysticism surrounded the DMT, it is not something I fully buy into as an explanation. The trip reports and general information, when it is not exploring the mystic I found very informative and even frighteningly familiar as someone who has tried DMT. Whether DMT is taking you to a divine realm, or whether it is merely stimulating the brain to conjure these hallucinations, either case is extremely interesting and worth further investigation.

Slow, but gets better!
The first half of this book was extremely dry - I heard it on Audible and all I can remember is "point 2 mg per kg" as the author labours on about the dosage given to his patients and his difficulties into how he tried to get funding for his study. This could have (and should have) been done in one chapter. Move forward to the 2nd half where he begins talking about the case studies and it gets a lot more interesting, it was amazing to hear the experiences of his subjects and the latter half of the book was brilliant. The narrator has a dull, boring tone, but it's something you get used to. Overall, a great book and it has definitely peaked my interest into the spirit molecule and my curiosity into how we could potentially be able to tune in to different wavelengths and frequencies. fantastic!

fascinating listen
I have heard a lot about DMT, so wanted to listen to this book to hear more about scientific investigation into it's effects. the first portion of the book is about how the studies came about, and the history of the relationship between science and psychedelics. the second part, from about chapter 12 onwards, is comprised of the various accounts of the participants in the studies. my background is in meditation and lucid dreaming practises, so this is definitely an interesting listen, and if given the opportunity, I believe that I would like to experience a DMT based 'trip' myself. recommended to people who are interested in DMT. some good insight.

Scientific study induced Consciousness experience
I'd been wanting to listen to this book, but so many of the Consciousness study books bog me down with physics, philosophy, or science and I have quite a few that I am having to go back to again and again and still haven't finished because I either can't comprehend them or they are eye-glazers.
Thankfully, DMT The Spirit Molecule is written in an easy-to-understand narrative style. Of course, like many of the "left-brain" MD or PhD authors, the first few hours of the audio book are spent laying out a scientific and educational foundation on the topic to be covered. Defining terms, giving the history, and current state of things . . . then getting to what happened in their own work.
As with other books I've read by researchers, there is a lot of bureaucracy and some politics involved with studies done in areas at the edge of the accepted norm, and it is amazing any meaningful research ever gets done to push the "cutting-edge" out further. The frustration translated to me, the reader/listener. And, it is a similar theme to Candace Pert's book Molecules of Emotion, another book called The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz, and Science Set Free by Rupert Sheldrake.
The experiences the DMT injected volunteers related upon "return" were interesting. I had heard descriptions before of some of the entities, but never of "spider people" - yet the day after I finished the book I saw a photograph of some ancient rock art and there was one of the entity types I had previously heard of, and which were mentioned in this book, AND there were some drawings of entities that could be called spider people.
The narrator made this book easy to listen to. And the writing was great, with a human touch and interesting personal reflections. Unlike some of the other scientifically-written Consciousness-related books I've bought I was able to finish this in 2 days, because the writing is so interesting and understandable, while other books have languished for months.

A must-have for anyone interested in anything.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend this book to anyone I think might read it. Powerful imagery, touching stories, and valuable knowledge of the history of psychedelic drugs are just the beginning.
What other book might you compare DMT: The Spirit Molecule to and why?
This book does not compare well to other works of literature. It has the somewhat dry, detailed explanation of procedures from Dr. Strassman himself, while at the same time encompassing a vast array of well worded vision and meaningful storyline.
What does Arthur Morey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Arthur Morey is fantastic. I have owned hard copies of this book before, and I absolutely prefer to hear it read by Mr. Morey than to read it myself.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
If I were the director of a film based upon the notes contained in this book, the title would assuredly be
Any additional comments?
Check it out. This book will give you a broader sense of not only drugs, psychology, the brain, religion, society, etc. But will give you a deeper understanding (or questioning) of reality in general, and how we perceive it.

wonderful insights... DMT is so beyond words!
I'm one of few fortunate to have experienced DMT and found this book fascinating... put simply, this experience was a zillion times beyond all experiences I've ever had (as I tell friends....combined!)...and I've explored oooodles of biochemical modulations...as an infomaniac, DMT spoke deeply and profoundly
I've attempted to understand and peered through many doorways...and the importance of the insights conveyed here...everyone should take the time to understand.
The experience of immersion into the electrical field of reality is the most profound experience of my 64 years of life. Rick sadly lays out our society's ignorant and unfortunate neglect of magical compounds nature avails us. I've often wondered how different the world would be if these doorways were explored by humans everywhere...
Reality is a trip and our vision is so cloudy...

Good attempt to investigate a phenomenon
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
For any one interested in the "near-death experience" phenomenon, this book should be read. The author has made an attempt to systematically investigate psychedelic experiences that are mediated by DMT, a substance I personally knew nothing about before reading this book. The account of the difficulty he had getting approval for his studies, and how it affected some of his other involvements, is interesting, as well. Not having a strong neurochemical information background, I found it difficult to evaluate some of the information he presented, but I do think the book is well written and provokes questions and desire for more research on the part of the reader.
What other book might you compare DMT: The Spirit Molecule to and why?
I am not aware of many other books that purport to study psychedelic phenomena, at least in current times. This book is certainly more research based than most of the books I have read about altered states of consciousness.
What does Arthur Morey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He treated the content with respect and thus supported the overall tone and nature of the book--that is, businesslike, but with appropriate emphasis, even on the personal material.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not necessarily, but it did hold my interest and there was a definite desire to finish it. HIs organization was logical and also showed a clear progression to the core of the results he found
Any additional comments?
This is a book that chronicles a more reasoned approach to altered states of consciousness than many of the other literature out there on this subject. He does a good job of labeling his biases when they come into play

VERY WELL DONE
Books of this sort are always a risk but this was done with great professionalism and well written as well.
Its a fascinating group of stories, including the lengthy story of how he finally got to do this dicey research in the first place
I'm fascinated by what this recent explosion of research into various psychedelia, (including ayawaska) are finding.
I find it all enormously fascinating .I would bet that this is the Best book of its kind on the subject.. Fine narration and credit worthy.

Very Intriguing
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes.
What did you like best about this story?
Dr. Strassman is incredibly objective in his approach to DMT. There are times when I would have thought his own personal desire for data to reflect a certain outcome would have clouded his approach, but it certainly didn't.
Which character – as performed by Arthur Morey – was your favorite?
NA
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No... It was packed with so much to ponder that it would have been difficult to listen to all in one listening
Any additional comments?
There are some parts of the book that are overly detailed and tend to be redundant, such as when he is explaining his challenges getting FDA approval for testing. The book could have been shortened quite a bit, butt it was a fantastic book none the less.

Not what I was hoping for
I purchased this book with the expectation that I would be exposed to a work focused on the experiences of those participating in the Doctor's study.
While there certainly is some of that, the book goes into great detail about the science behind how the drug works and the logistics involved in setting up the study. This type of material might be interesting to some but it's not my cup of tea. Finishing the book become a chore.
A high point for me: I was intrigued by the author's comments on alien abductions and how that phenomenon may be related to DMT.

Door Opening
The story of the research done by Rick Strassman and the implications are nothing less than some of the most Humanly relevant ideas that I have ever heard in my life. I recomend this book to anyone that has any interest in religion or neurobiology.
