About this listen

Dinosaur is the first novel in the New World series, brilliantly brought to life by BBC's Chris Barrie (Red Dwarf).

The leader of a sinister political group hatches an insane plan to save humanity. Fighting to stop them could doom us all. When every action and decision may determine the fate of everyone who has ever lived, the right choice is not always clear. However, for one man, there is no choice at all...

Captain James Douglas sets off on a mundane transport and supply mission that quickly descends into disaster. Leading a fledgling society through a wild and hostile world was not part of his brief. Nor was the custodianship of all human life, history, and endeavor. Worse still, an enemy hides among his passengers, while the knowledge of a boy, just days out of school, may be all that stands between mankind and extinction.

The crew of the USS New World is lost almost 100 million years ago in Mid-Cretaceous Gondwana. It is the time of the dinosaur...for now.

Critic reviews

“A highly suspenseful time-travel adventure series, combining a clever mix of detailed prehistory and history throughout - not to mention some great bad guys. The twists and turns really keep you guessing, while the darkness and humour really keep you reading. Not to be missed.” (Black Sheep Books)

“Spaceships, wormholes and dinosaurs! Don't miss it.” (Stephen Baxter, author of The Long Earth)

“Epic! Full of big ideas and clever protagonists! A thrilling tale told on a huge scale. Llewelyn clearly knows - and loves - his dinosaurs, a knowledge and passion that shines through. The result is a big, bold adventure. Classic science-fiction, dinosaurs, crashed spaceship, what's not to love?” (Simon Guerrier)

Really engaging story with great characters with wit made real by impeccable narration by Chris Barry.

Absolutely amazing narration.

Got this because I loved Chris Barrie's narration of Red Dwarf books but the writing here is pretty poor. Clearly aimed at kids but very plodding/slow in places. You wait a long time for the dinosaurs and then it manages to make them quite dull.

Good narrator but poor writing.

A very good story.
Narration by Chris Barrie was fantastic.
Highly recommended.
Hope that the sequel may be added to Audible eventually.

Brilliantly read

So many engaging conflicts and twists, and Chris Barrie’s top tier reading makes it super easy to tell all the characters apart and love every single one of them in different ways. Immediately purchased Revenge’s audio book afterwards! I hope there’s more to come!!

The study of how a society tries to rebuild itself and hold itself together in an inescapable crisis situation.

Spaceships, dinosaurs, colourful likeable characters, Chris Barrie with his always impeccable and cleverly pitched performance. This could be the perfect audiobook. So enjoyable. Thank you. Excited for the next one. :)

The perfect audiobook
