Summary
A Warhammer 40,000 Novel
Cypher has slipped his bonds on Holy Terra itself. Hunted by some of the most powerful forces the Imperium can muster, can he complete his mission before he’s apprehended?
LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE
Cypher is one of the most mysterious figures in the galaxy, and this novel sheds light on his motivations and thoughts. Although, told from Cypher’s own point of view, his words are suspect by default...
THE STORY
As the Great Rift unfolds in the night sky above Terra and daemons walk upon the birth world of mankind, the Primarch Roboute Guilliman returns, heralding a dark new age.
During the breaking storm, Cypher and his band of Fallen escape from the most secure prison in the Imperium. Now loose in the Imperial Palace, they are hunted by warriors of the Dark Angels, forces of the Adeptus Custodes, and Imperial Assassins. But what are Cypher’s intentions? Can anything or anyone be trusted?
Told from Cypher’s own, unreliable point of view, this tale of truth, lies and secrets sees one of the Imperium’s most mysterious figures make war at its very heart. But what are the true motivations of the Lord of the Fallen?

Cypherius
Keeps you guessing. Cypher the book keeps you in the Dark pretty much the same amount as Cypher the Dark Angel fools and schools whoever is after him.
This book is a tight package, John French tends to be 'wordy', but Cypher really has nothing extra in it. It just works.

A book full of atmosphere and mystery
This has been an excellent audiobook, cypher is quite literally is a person of his name. His actions make no sense, yet with a secret it is implied that is where his reason lays. Nothing is certain in this book, and it makes for a very interesting listen

Probably the best storytelling in BL yet.
Really good storytelling. Excellent narration. Lots of show-not-tell narrative. Brilliant, makes the Dark Angels and Cypher meta narrative even more intriguing!

It’s marvellous, or is it?
Evil Dark Angels, desperate Fallen, a scorned demigod and an enigma as a storyteller. What else could you possibly want?

Very well narrated, fascinating story that keeps you guessing what will happen next!
I really like this portraitation of such an iconic, pivotal and enigmatic character. The narration really enhances the story and is very well read. A must-read/listen if you like Dark Angels and the Fallen!

Pointless story
I really just couldn’t get into this it just offers nothing in terms of progressing the lore surrounding the fallen. Narrator was excellent tho.

Exciting but a bit unsubstential story-wise
Performance is above and beyond, bringing Cypher to life perfectly, writing style is spot on as well.

Cypher: All Omnipotent and Omniscient
Is Cypher more powerful than the Emperor? Is he the emperor? Does he hold a shard of the emperor's soul within in.....that would be the only explanation for the events that unfold in this book.
How has he not solved all the universes problems?
How has he not exterminated the Tyranids...
Driven back Chaos to the brink...
Negotiated treaties with the Tao and Eldar....
Fixed the webway....
Seems like he is powerful enough to do so after reading this...
This guy has every inch of Ultra Marine Plot armor condensed onto one person.
But if you love Ex Machina style ....then get ready for your favorite
40k Book of all Time!!!!
This is the first 40k book in my library I have been building for 20 years that I have no desire to read or listen to again. I want my money back.

Nothing happens.
This book is nothing. it's 5 monotonous hours of the least interesting, least influential, 40k storytelling I've ever heard. French did something worse than write a bad 40k story. He wrote a boring one.

meh.
honestly I found this pretty mediocre. It gets hard to follow because of the constant shifting between chars. nothing is advanced in it as far as 40k. nothing is learned. its just a constant oh guess what ima do now. even though little of what he dos makes any sence or has any logic. it feels like treading water. its a story that told nothing. I get it he's mysterious. not impressed.
the positives are I liked the reader. and I guess the setting? other than that I cannot really find much to enjoy.

something something secrets truths
first off, narrator was great. excellent performer and setter of mood.
but nothing happened. like I heard the words secret and truth so many times if I played a drinking game I would have had liver failure after the second hour.
he describes Terra and Terran society super well and kudos for that.
nothing was revealed, except (spoiler? is it a spoiler if it's been hinted for years?)
he may or may not be working for emps or an external force we know nothing about?
also (spoilers for real)
also also even though it takes place during the battle for Terra, there isn't a single one of the emperor's companions guarding the gate to the throne room? you know. the guys who did nothing and stayed there when the orks had a battlemoon over the imperial palace. or for most of the age of apostasy. or every time Terra is threatened?
a dark angel killing a custodes and calling someone else a traitor right after is mind boggling but about right for dark angels.
after the return of the lion I thought it might be a connection to it or perhaps more dept look into him aiding Roboute. but no- just Cypher narrating to himself like his spoof character did in Text To Speech Device on YouTube lol.

Avery fun read
really enjoyed the fun of this book, all the futures and characters almost breaking the fourth wall describing the changing story and possibilities. A great read for those who know a good bit about the setting already.

A stellar story told by a stellar narrator
I’m a newcomer to 40K but I did not feel lost in the story at all. It’s full of action and intrigue as well as appearances from numerous imperial factions. Not to mention, the titular Cypher whose true allegiance remains unclear BUT better understood after hearing this audiobook.
The narration is spectacular and kept me engaged the whole way. I highly recommend to 40K fans old and new alike.

not needed reading for any story arch
it's a very ok listen. I didn't learn anything new about cypher other than what the title revealed. The character comes off as pompous and lacking substance. not worth spending a credit.

The Narrator Carried this CORPSE on his BACK
The amount of prose in this book are reduliculous. Someone please tell Mr. French that he CAN in fact use words other the Secrets and Truth in EVERY SINGLE SENTANCE. On top of that, Literally NOTHING happens... the only thing about this book that got me excited was when I realized it was almost over. Not worth the money or your credits. I'd literally listen to 'A Thousand Sons' on repeat for a week, then even entertain the idea of listening to this one again. Good Narration though.
