Summary

In this long-awaited prequel to his New York Times best-selling series, Jefferson Bass turns the clock back to reveal the Body Farm's creation - and Dr. Bill Brockton's deadly duel with a serial killer.

In the summer of 1992, Arkansas governor Bill Clinton and Tennessee senator Al Gore begin their long-shot campaign to win the White House. On a sweltering hillside in Knoxville, Dr. Bill Brockton, the bright, ambitious young head of the University of Tennessee's Anthropology Department, launches an unusual - some would call it macabre - research facility, unlike any other in existence. Brockton is determined to revolutionize the study of forensics to help law enforcement solve homicides. But the scientist's plans are derailed by a chilling murder that leaves him reeling from a sense of deja vu. Followed by another. And then another: bodies that bear an eerie resemblance to cases from Brockton's past.

The police chalk up the first corpse to coincidence. But as the body count rises, the victims' fatal injuries grow more and more distinctive - a spiral of death that holds dark implications for Brockton himself. If the killer isn't found quickly, the death toll could be staggering. And the list of victims could include Brockton…and everyone he holds dear.

Grimmer than the previous books.

Another gripping story in the Body Farm series. But I found this one darker and more disturbing.

Too much of the villain.

I'd estimate about 50% of the book spent time in the mind of a deranged killer and/or his horrific deeds. I had expected more scientific sleuthing and less "slasher movie". I feed off good sleuthing; blood & guts, not so much.

I almost didn't finish it. But I'll try one more.

Holding on until the end

Well written and just as well read. The narrator does a phenomenal job with timber and inflection to differentiate the characters. This was my first Jefferson Bass story but definitely NOT the last!

Jefferson Bass at their best

This was far and away my favorite of the series. I purchased this in audiobook and found myself still awake at 4 a.m. because I couldn't turn it off! Kept me on the edge of my seat and, while I could anticipate some of the plot twists, it was still a good book. Highly recommend.

Tom Stechschulte is awesome in his narration.

So far, always worth waiting for!!

I just love these books and I've not been disappointed in any. I believe this is the best one to date. Dr. Brockton doesn't have fancy airplanes to whisk him anywhere and there is not one computer hacker in sight. No, he just uses good old-fashioned forensic science, detective work and common sense. You will be caught up into this series from the minute you read your first book. Can't wait for a new one to come out and the narrator does an excellent job.

Just Amazingly Thrilling!

Wow! I am hooked on Jefferson Bass and will now devour the series, I am certain! This book was really great -- even though we knew who the killer was from very early on. What we didn't know was how the macabre events would play out, and that, believe it or not, made it very, very engaging. The narration is terrific, the characters so relatable, the story line totally a page turner. No fault to be found. Five stars in my book!

Scarfed It Up!

This was one of those that said "yuck" one minute and the next minute saying "don't trust him" and then shutting your eyes and screaming, "NO!" So worth the read or listening! Keep these stories coming!

I loved The Bone Yard, and having this book pop up was really great! I think I've found a new series to follow!

I was not prepared

This is the first Jefferson Bass/Body Farm book I’ve heard; I was not prepared. The performer really laid on the southern twang, at times. The story was very graphic. I was prepared for the murders to detail what the victims had encountered but not prepared for an inside to the killer’s thoughts, while performing the murders. Nor was I ready for the killer’s backstory. I’ve wanted to read/listen to a Body Farm book because of being from Tennessee and watching CSI. Now I’ll know what to expect but I could still do without the heavy twang.

Good book, love this series.

I really enjoyed this book...except the snake and snake dreams! I always learn something new from the Jefferson Bass books.
