About this listen

Guilt and grief have driven a wedge between long time crime-fighting partners psychologist Tony Hill and ex-DCI Carol Jordan. But just because they're not talking doesn't mean the killing stops.

Someone is killing women. Women who bear a disturbing resemblance to Carol Jordan. And when the evidence begins to point in a disturbing direction, thinking the unthinkable seems the only possible answer.

"A genuine page turner" ( Independent on Sunday)

From the opening chapter you know this is classic, quality crime writing at it's best and a very welcome return for Carol and Tony. This had me gripped from the start, by the plot, the superb characterisation and the relationship between Carol and Tony. There is some unpalatable violence towards women, however it is not gratuitous and is acceptable within the gripping plotline. This book reminds me just how well Val McDermid writes and that she is in a different league to most other crime writers. For those of who find the relationship between Tony and Carol so compelling this is a very satisfying listen.
I always enjoy Saul Reichlin's narration but did find some of the characters voices a little irritating- this, however is a minor fault as his rich, dark voice is well suited to the story.

Val McDermid at her best

I just love these books and this series. Saul the reader is brilliant! The story is as always gripping.

Another brilliant book!

What disappointed you about Cross and Burn?

The reader and style is so slow I had to turn it up to 1.25 to listen- ponderous!!- and story line so boringly unoriginal- I had many attempts but couldn't finish this. Truly a waste of money for me.

Awful

I did not know that there was a series in these books and did in fact do this one first, I was not disappointed its a gripping crime story with Carol the detective and Tony the psychologist it does in fact go back to why these two have called it a day on their relationship, has Carol has a very grisly background and obviously Tony was involved in that, after this book i have added more of this author in my wish list.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, in particular to Val McDermid fans and fans of any other murder mysteries

What other book might you compare Cross and Burn to, and why?

Wire in the Blood, another Tony Hill book.

What three words best describe Saul Reichlin’s voice?

Nice, warm, distracting

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Couldn't!

Any additional comments?

I found the reader's "voices" distracting and not always well chosen. In particular, his characterisation of some of the female characters was off-kilter to my ears. Whilst I appreciate this is difficult for a male, McDermids characters are so strong, some of his soft voices did not represent this to me.

I loved being on holiday, in the sun, by the pool, listening to a book and knitting! Multitasking for lazy people!

By the way, what is the equivalent of a page turner for an audiobook? An ear burner?

Great addition to a great series
