About this listen

A small-town romantic suspense story from Wall Street Journal and USA Today best-selling author Devney Perry.

Lyla Eden has spent the last few years watching her siblings fall in love. Meanwhile, she’s married to her job. It’s on her hundredth consecutive workday that her sister stages an intervention, kicking Lyla out of her own coffee shop. With nothing else to do, Lyla sets out on her favorite hiking trail.

It’s there that she spots a man washing blood from his hands in a stream. One moment she’s staring at the jagged scar on his face. The next, his hand is around her throat. But by some miracle, he lets her go.

Shaken to her core, Lyla reports the incident to the local police. Two days later, Vance Sutter arrives in town, armed with endless questions and a tarnished badge.

Vance may be ruggedly handsome, but he’s as mysterious as the man he’s hunting. And he’ll be gone from Quincy in a blink. Yet Lyla’s crush is impossible to stop.

No matter how hard Vance tries to ignore it, there’s no denying the chemistry between them. And avoiding Lyla is not an option. After years of chasing dead ends, she’s his only lead to closing the case that haunts his career. So together, they’ll retrace her steps.

To find the scarred man she met beside a crimson river.

I really enjoyed Lyla and Vance's book because there was a good balance of suspense and mystery along side the romance. Lucy and Connor did an amazing job with this dual narration.

I don't know why she's been hired again in this series. Her male voice sounds like eeyore. She's trying to go too deep and her intonation is the same for every sentence and completely unnatural. It takes me out of the story constantly and ruins a really good story.

Female narrator ruins another story

I love this series so much, it got me hooked on Devney Perry books and I’ve been making my way through her backlist. I’m gutted we only have 1 book left in this series, but as the saying goes I’m hoping we are saving the best till last. Not like I haven’t loved the whole series. But Mateo 😍
I love the romantic suspense element we have in these books. It just adds that little bit of danger without it being too much and taking away from the story. This book had me hooked and I had to keep turning the pages to find out what would happen. Layla and Vance are perfect together and they had this unstoppable chemistry. I loved seeing the rest of the Eden gang again. This series is so heartwarming.
Bring on Mateo’s book!!!

Love it!

I struggled with how to rate book 5 of The Edens as the mystery/Romantic Suspense aspect of it was one of the more interesting ones I've read by this author, even though I called what had actually happened about an hour into the book while chatting back and forth with the friend I'm buddy reading this series with. But that is just how my brain works.

The romance however fell utterly flat, Lyla & Vance gave me absolutely nothing to connect with, it was far too insta lust/love for me and there just wasn't any chemistry or tangible reason other than physical attraction for them to feel the way they felt for each other. Instead of Lyla & Vance having the hard/difficult conversations and opening up to each other to form an emotional bond, the spice in this book was used as a crutch when they should have been forming a deep and meaningful connection through interactions outside of just sex but didn't.

I loved the snippets/scenes we got with the whole Eden clan, those family moments really warm my heart and make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Cromac was such an intriguing and interesting character I wish we had got more from him! I just didn't connect with Lyla & Vance like I have other couples from this series, it all just felt very surface level between them but I did enjoy the book overall. Lucy Rivers & Connor Crais performances were a joy to listen to as always, they are two of my favourite narrators for a reason. 🌶.5
