Summary

An unbearably tense novel of revenge, murder, bereavement and the destructive force of passion. First published in Norwegian in 1979, it was described by the critic Nils Nordberg as 'one of the finest, most serious, most ambitious books in post-war Norwegian crime writing'.

The single-mother families of the isolated community under the shadow of the Pyderhorn, Bergen's greatest mountain, are being terrorised by a teenage gang. But teenage violence is nothing compared to what awaits detective Varg Veum when he gets to know the blue-eyed Wenche Andersen.

If it wasn't for Colin Mace's....

....excellent narration this book would barely rate a 2 from me. I found the story weak, and it took far too long for the unfolding of the core story to begin. Personally I found the female characters one dimensional. This writer not for me. Only Colin Mace's performance kept me listening.

Unnecessary Hyperbole

Full of unnecessary hyperbole, a weak story and ending, Varg Veum is no Harry Hole.

Hmmm ...

Not his best book in my opinion. I know the era the book was written in and I get that nordic feel with a noir PI too ... but there was just too much of that ‘trying to be smart’ hyperbole or embellishment ... which for me meant it just wasnt as good as the other books ....

a good story...

that was over embellished with 'smart remarks or quips ', but the killer was illusive to the end
