Publisher's Summary

In tomorrow's world prowls a creative and ruthlessly efficient assassin who won't stop until Kirsten is killed.

A troubled woman approaches Kirsten with a warning and a key and is later found dead. Was the woman just another victim of the Suicide Contagion, or is there something more sinister at play? The key leads Kirsten to the Doomsday Vault and a hit list of seven people - and her barcode is on it.

Edgy and original, Why You Were Taken is a dark cinematic thriller that will keep you guessing till the last.

"Science fiction and mystery. Gripping story."

A gripping story that takes place in two timelines but is easy to follow. The story takes place in south Africa in both the past and the future. There are elements of science fiction, family, trust and murder. Interesting to the very end.

    "The opposite of nothing."
A great disappointment since the initial premise seems to hold out good possibilities, which blur into an apparent overreaction and slightly hysterical silliness towards the ending.
Told in two timelines (1987 and a futuristic 2021), from three individual perspectives, and set in South Africa, the writing is simplistic and easy to read. An attempt to add veracity to the story is made by the earlier time line being presented in the form of a young woman's journal which not only notes her personal experiences but also lists the books she is reading and films, TV programmes and music which are playing at that moment in her life. Interspersed with these chapters are the events occuring seperately in the 'present' year of 2021 to a young man and woman. These latter lives finally draw together as the story gains momentum.

The narrator, Roshina Ratnam, has a pleasant if somewhat little girlie voice which fits well with the writing. Her reading is clear and well modulated with a reasonable vocal patterning for the main protagonists. But it is not enough to make this story anything more than a lightweight mystery thriller

I was fortunate in being gifted a complementary copy of Why You Were Taken by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom, at my request. My thanks for that. Although quite enjoyable, and with the potential to be a very exciting and original story, for this reader it failed by trying too hard. Such a pity.

    "A great near-future thriller!"

Enjoyed this one a lot! From the author's fascinating incorporation of synesthesia to likeable/believable characters and thought-provoking plot, there's a lot to like here. I'm looking forward to the sequels.

    "My review"

This is differently a different kind of book, but I really liked it.

It takes place in the future and tells of three people who believe that the choice of procreation shouldn't be left up to individual people, but rather a select group of people. There's gun fights, car chases, ling lost family and love.

    "Entertaining and enjoyable"

Overall a very entertaining, engaging and enjoyable story. Even though it is an interesting, original and creative story it was very confusing in the beginning. Stick with it. It's worth it.

The unfamiliar setting of South Africa, the difference in words/slang used, the back and forth in time periods and the "altered" world in which the story takes place all added to the confusion. Despite being confusing in the beginning it's like watching an Indie film, you have no clue what is going on but little by little things start to come together. The story moves at a slower pace in the beginning and as things start to make sense it picks up pace as you are drawn deeper and deeper into the story. Before you know it you are so caught up in the story you can't stop listening. I do have to say it was about chapter 13 before I was completely drawn into the story. From that point on I wanted to listen in one sitting and was irritated anytime I had to pause the book. It is definitley a series I will continue with.

Good cast of interesting and well rounded characters. Kirsten(Kate) and Seth(Sam) are both interesting characters. Keke just about stole the show though. She was just one of characters that has personality that jumps off the page.

There were a couple of times I wanted to shake some sense into Kirsten. When you find out you’re a target, hurry up and leave, you don’t stop and take a few minutes to…..can't say or I'd be giving some of the story away.

This is the first time I have listened to Roshina Ratnam narrate a book. She did a fantastic job with the narration. Nice voice that it easy to listen to for long periods of time. Her voice fit the characters. Clearly spoken with a nice smooth pace. Really good character voices. Both male and female. She was able to bring the characters and the story to life. Hopefully she will be narrating the rest of the series. I'm looking forward to listening to more books she narrates in the future. Very enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this book. The author does a great job world building and developing the characters in the book. The narrator was VERY good. She really has an interesting accent and brought the characters to live. Definitely worth a credit.

    "Exciting story, outstanding narration"

To avoid giving too much away, I'll just say this is an old theme in a futuristic South African setting. I think this story needed to be set a little further into the future. The technology described goes quite a ways beyond what can be expected in less than 5 years. But with sufficient suspension of disbelief, this is a very suspenseful thriller.

The South African setting gave me pause. Many references to people and places were unfamiliar to me, so I'm sure I missed some of the impact of the story. Some of the colloquialisms went right over my head. Still, I enjoyed the story.

Roshina Ratnam's outstanding performance contributed significantly to my enjoyment.

This is book 1 in the When Tomorrow Calls series, but thankfully, it's a complete story. There's no cliffhanger or loose ends.

    "Great Dystopian Sci-Fi"
What made the experience of listening to Why You Were Taken the most enjoyable?

I think what was the most enjoyable aspect of this is JT Lawrence's pacing and imagination. This is the second book of hers I have read, and I can say I really dig the way she fleshes out the characters and setting, and then lets the roller coaster go.

Which character – as performed by Roshina Ratnam – was your favorite?

First Roshina Ratnam did an absolutely awesome job, and thought all of the voices were great and enjoyable. My favorite character is easily Keke, both in the way she is written and preformed she was my favorite. I loved the interactions between Keke and Kirsten, and feel like I could listen to each other and find that plenty interesting in itself.

    Any additional comments?

This is a great Sci-Fi adventure that is set in a world you can easily imagine being a lot closer to reality then we might like. The characters and pacing are great, and the story is fast and exciting.

This book juggles a lot of genres, perspectives, and a few time lines all excellently. I find with a lot of books that change perspective between chapters, there are points in them where you dread these swaps. I didn't feel that in this book, everything flowed together really well, and I never had those points where I was going through one perspective just trying to get back to the character or time I wanted to keep following.

The world building and character development in the book was great, and can't wait to see what the future hold for this series. I am really interested in what comes next, as this book can totally work as a standalone. I hope it keeps going with these current characters, as you really come to know them and like them throughout their journey, plus I need some more Keke and Kirsten scenes.
