Publisher's Summary

When 13-year-old Matthew Whateley goes missing from Bredgar Chambers, a prestigious public school in the heart of West Sussex, aristocratic Inspector Thomas Lynley receives a call for help from the lad's housemaster, who also happens to be an old school chum. Thus, the inspector, his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, and forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James find themselves once again outside their jurisdiction and deeply involved in the search for a child - and then, tragically, for a child killer. Questioning prefects, teachers, and pupils closest to the dead boy, Lynley and Havers sense that something extraordinarily evil is going on behind Bredgar Chambers's cloistered walls. But as they begin to unlock the secrets of this closed society, the investigation into Matthew's death leads them perilously close to their own emotional wounds - and blinds them to the signs of another murder in the making...

Good narration by Derek Jacobi and a good plot as you would expect from this skilled writer

This was a terrible audio book. It was a recast of an original production and the sound was horrible.

    Very, very disappointed in Audible!!!!!!

    "Good author, poor narrator"

I found the narrator very hard to understand. I thought that he spoke too quickly, and didn't enunciate well. I should have listened to the excerpt before buying. There were large segments that I just couldn't hear properly.

    "Grim, miserable tale"

A grim take of torture, homosexual rape and murder at a posh English boarding school. There are no redeeming characteristics here. Narration in this 2 hour audiobook was rushed and difficult to understand. I have enjoyed other books by Elizabeth George but not this one. I cannot recommend.

"quality of the audio is awful"

Very hard to hear and understand - and the music makes it even worse! Had to listen to it at .75% to even understand the words...

"Great story as part of a series..but"

The production values on this version were terrible. And the music signaling the ellipses of the longer book was bad. Al this was very distracting.

    "Horrible recording!"
What disappointed you about Well-Schooled in Murder?

The quality of the recording was extremely poor.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The story itself was quite good - no criticism here.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator detracted significantly from this book - at least for this American listener. He spoke much too quickly, and with his British accent, I missed much of his narration.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Well-Schooled in Murder?

I would make no changes to the story itself.

    Any additional comments?

The overall quality of this recording was so bad that I wish I could get my Audible credit back.

    "Not worth one credit"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who likes recordings that sound like they are from a gramophone. The recording quality was exceptionally poor.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was fine, although I made a mistake of not realizing it was abridged. I don't like abridged stories so that was my fault.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Derek Jacobi?

    He was fine.

    Any additional comments?

Since it was abridged, perhaps the recording had been taken from an unabridged version and that's why the quality was so poor.

    "Extremely poor quality!"
What would have made Well-Schooled in Murder better?

    Being able to hear it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Elizabeth George again?

Yes - I like her books and had wanted to hear the Inspector Lynley books from the beginning so I bought some of the earlier books but the quality of three of them was so bad that I was unable to listen to them.

What didn’t you like about Derek Jacobi’s performance?

    Couldn't understand a word said.

What character would you cut from Well-Schooled in Murder?

    N/A. Couldn't hear it.

    "OK for a lonely weekend!"

Intertesing. Twists and turns keep you glued to the text...but be ready to listen closely...lots of names and places enter into the dialogue.....but it is slick.....enjoy.
