Summary

Avery Shaw is living the dream.... Kind of.

She's officially moved to her dream house, and her boyfriend Eliot Kane is making her host a housewarming party to show off the new digs to her family. All is going well–other than the endless arguments over food and hiding from Avery's family, of course–until one of Avery's enemies comes calling.

Avery's former boyfriend Jake Farrell broke up with Cara Carpenter weeks before but she's still stalking him.... and Avery in the process. When Cara turns up dead at a high-profile event, not only is Jake a suspect, but Avery and Eliot are, too.

The Michigan State Police wrestle the investigation from Jake, promptly turning Avery from the hunter to the hunted. The state police investigator assigned to the case is all up in Avery's business–and Avery is cracking under the pressure even as she insists on covering the case, much to almost everybody's chagrin.

From the stress associated with the new house, Grandpa's constant naked visits to the pool, and Eliot's insistence that Avery own up to something illegal, things are starting to get tense.

Avery is on her heels for a bit before starting to put the pieces together. When the truth comes out, though, the answers are welcome but the danger is not.

Can Avery survive to irritate everyone another day? Or will Michigan's favorite reporter finally succumb to a mouth she can't quite seem to control?

Is this series drowning

Okay, this seemed to take a long time to get to the investigation and to be honest I nearly gave up. It was a lot of unnecessary family arguing and drama, oh so much drama and most of it is caused by the main character. However I stuck with it and although the arguing and snarky comments didn't stop, it did get better. I have been with this series from the start and never really got why Avery and Cara hated each other so much, other than because of the sheriff but in this book we learn a lot more about Cara and everything is explained. While Avery can be annoying at times and is definitely not my favourite character out there and I have no idea why her boyfriend puts up with her, she is loyal to the people she likes and does get to the bottom of an investigation, like only she can do. The mystery was actually good and at some point humours, if only she could be less whiney.

Eliot talks his girlfriend Avery into having a house warming party but soon wishes he didn't. Not only do they get unwanted guests turn up at all hours to swim in there swimming pool but it also makes them prime suspects when a murder occurs.
Her ex boyfriend and the sheriff Jake 's ex girlfriend and the woman who they kicked out of the party is found dead floating with the stingrays on the grand opening day of the new aquarium. Jake can't investigate and the Michigan State Police are called in. The detective seems to keen to investigate the three of them than anybody else. So it's up to Avery to find the killer. Avery never liked Cara but even she is surprised by what Cara was capable of. Can she get to the bottom of the murder before one of them is arrested?
I am not sure the narrator is the right person for this series. I don't think Avery is supposed to be quite as whiny as she makes her out to be. I do like The other character voices though.
