Summary

Dublin, Ireland and Richmond, Virginia: separated by thousands of miles - linked by murder.

Five dismembered, beheaded bodies were found in Ireland five years ago - now four have been discovered in the States. But the tenth corpse in Virginia is different. A copy-cat killing. Ghoulish, perhaps, but not unusual. Then abject terror grips Scarpetta and her colleagues when the next body is found with a clear and horrifying message: the killer is armed with the most lethal weapon on earth - smallpox.

A sadistic serial killer, the weapon a deadly virus. The eighth novel in the best-selling Dr Kay Scarpetta series.

Story is great, narrator not so good

the story is great as usual for Patricia Cornwell, just found the narrator not so great. I prefer Lorelei King as a narrator. She reads the book as different people. It means you know when 'Scarpetta' is talking, or 'Lucy" or any of the other characters.

Audiobook issues

The book itself was fine, although in a couple of places the recording failed to play properly. In two instances, the audio jumped or repeated a few lines over and over, with no fault of the app itself because when viewing the audiobook play, the seconds continued as normal, so it is an issue with the recording itself rather than the audible app.

Poor effort with the recording

Having read the book I already know and love the story but this audio version is pretty poor. The audio skips, repeats and occasionally crackles which is really disappointing to say the least and makes it difficult to finish. Much prefer lorelei King.

Very disappointing, unfortunately.

Having lost the outstanding services - for whatever reason - of Lorelei King is, l feel, a real set back.

Good book spoilt by narrator

It was really hard to listen to the narrator - I will sadly not be purchasing another book if same narrator.

Audio book was terrible!

This recording was incredibly poor. The chapters kept skipping back each time I came back to continue the book. There were moments of blurred and choppy speech, making it impossible to follow the story. I’ve no idea what happened in this story, it was near impossible to follow due to the poor quality of recording. I wish I could get my money back!

So sad.

When my eyesight was better I read and enjoyed many Patricia Cornwall stories. I may have enjoyed this one too but the reader grated on my senses. This is the first time in listening to an audio book that I cannot bear to turn it on again after listening through 2 and a half chapters. Do wish I could have heard the story. I imagine it might have been as good as her other were.

Oh dear.

What would have made Unnatural Exposure better?

A coherent story line.

What was most disappointing about Patricia Cornwell’s story?

Lack of character development. Lots of unanswered questions and pointless distractions which were not tied into anything. Complete disregard for common sense. Regular characters not treated with respect.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of C. J. Critt?

Someone who had less of an edge to their voice. The British voice was just dreadful. Made Dick Van Dyke seem authentic.

What character would you cut from Unnatural Exposure?

Kay Scarpetta. She was a complete bore in this book.

Any additional comments?

This was a real disappointment. I have enjoyed all the other books to date but this was a real step backwards. Scarpetta has no redeeming features in this book at all.

Spoiled again

I was glad to see that the next books in the series are narrated by someone else.

Good Story, Lousy Narration.

The narrator was slow and nasal, with all the dramatic ability of a banana.

The audio skipped really badly too.
