Editor reviews

An American classic, Melville Davisson Post's Uncle Abner mysteries see a modern retelling in this powerful performance from Walter Covell. Covell's deep, resonant voice adds extra drama to these tales of justice-wielding Virginia backwoodsman Uncle Abner. Set in the early 19th century before the foundation of the American police system, Abner takes justice into his own hands, with the help of an inborn knowledge of human psychology and a sense of ethics taken from the Bible. Including stories like "The Wrong Hand", "The Treasure Hunter", and "A Twilight Adventure", this collection is a compelling listening for anyone who loves first-rate mystery.

Summary

If you look at any listing of the ten most important books of detective stories published in the United States, chances are you will find Uncle Abner on most of them. It is generally recognized as one of the most important contributions to American dectective fiction between Poe and Hammett. In fact, there are some critics who call it the single finest collecton of American detective stories ever written.

This collection of classic mystery stories includes:
"The Doomdorf Mystery", "The Wrong Hand", "The Angel of the Lord", "An Act of God", "The Treasure Hunter", "The House of the Dead Man", and "A Twilight Adventure".

Not as good as expected

Having read reviews of this book, I have to admit to being more than a little disappointed. No way can these writings be compared to Doyle or Sayers.
