Summary

Jason Archer is a rising young executive at Triton Global, the world's leading technology conglomerate. Determined to give his family the best of everything, he has secretly entered into a deadly game of cat and mouse. He is about to disappear, leaving behind a wife who must sort out his lies from his truths; an air-crash investigation team that wants to know why the plane he was booked on suddenly fell from the sky; and a veteran FBI agent who leaves no stone unturned.

Soon the startling truth behind Jason Archer's disappearance explodes into a sinister plot involving the murder of the country's single most powerful individual. And Archer's wife, Sidney, is plunged straight into the violence, now faced with trail of dead bodies and shocking exposed secrets.

A breathtaking thrill-ride on a roller coaster of nonstop action and suspense from one of the world's favourite storytellers.

Wonderfully complex

I really enjoyed this story and listened to it almost constantly! A wonderfully convoluted plot. Well written and well narrated.

Shame About The Newsreader

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Generally, yes. Baldacci is a good story-teller.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jonathan Marosz’s performances?

No. He read it like a newsreader and made it very difficult to get into the pace of the narrative, as it just plodded on and on. Surely his producer/director should have corrected this.

Great story, awful narrator

I’m only part way through the book but am going to have to move to the ‘read it myself’ version, which seems a real waste of money. I’ve persevered through 2.5 hours. The narrator is so bad. He switches between sounding like he is reading the news and reading out a list. His voice is monotonous and seems to have no emotion at all. Very disappointed.

David Baldacci

Another brilliant piece of work from the master of suspense. An old piece but nevertheless a fantastic story

What A Plodder! Not The Author's Fault

I'm sure this is a really good story. Sadly, I never got to find out. I had to stop listening part way through, as the narration was utterly appalling. Not in the least bit engaging and so monotonous. PLEASE do not let this man anywhere near any future David Baldacci narrations.

I would suggest you buy this book to read, not listen to. It will increase your chances of enjoying it tremendously.

Not bad but I hope his later women are less stupid

Sydney Archer was deliberately written as ridiculously dumb and that annoyed me. This story was good, if dated, but it did convey a period not so long ago when the world of cyberspace was very different and the aspirations of those in at the beginning were naive at best.

It definitely reflects a world where men were men and women dumb.

OK but not one of Baldacci's better books ...

Narrator's voice was harsh to my ears. Storyline dragged on a bit - not my most favourite of DB's novels. Overall, would rate it OK but I did not engage fully with the storyline as I have with his other books, and it therefore felt a bit like hard work at times.
