Summary

Cosy crime, quaint but generic & unchallenging
Easy listening post WW1 cosy crime with plucky heroine, once again ignoring any sexist hurdles women had to leap over at the time. There’s some raised eyebrows at women drivers but that’s really as bad as it gets, let alone the idea that the heroine was a spy aged 17 in the war. It’s possible but hugely unbelievable given the demure nature of the character. Still, if you want something unchallenging to fall asleep to this makes pleasant listening. (As long as it’s free)

Don't waste your time or money on this
A drippy, soppy story, terribly narrated. I really don't know why I bothered to finish this. The female narrator with a plumb in her mouth does a very bad job of all the male characters. The story is so weak. If this is the first of a series, it will be the last of the series for me.

Awful nonsense
I nearly returned this book after about 5 minutes but thought, to be fair, that I should give it a bit longer. I was doing other things while listening so I ended up hearing it all. Agatha Christie-esque plot with red herrings at one moment and the blindingly obvious the next. The heroine is supposed to have been a spy but she’s not the brightest and has to keep being helped out by men. Her relationship with her narcissistic and obsessed dead husband would have friends calling for an injunction. But hey, it’s just a book.

Poor addition to this genre
I’ve stopped listening to this after a few chapters and would return it if I could. It’s a very poor imitation of much better authors like Jacqueline Winspear. The story hasn’t got going at all so far, and the narration is not good, with strange renditions of the male characters in particular. None of them comes across as likeable, rather as pompous and artificial. The language veers between very pedantic early 20th C usage to modern, e.g ‘in a heartbeat’ and doesn’t ring true.
