Summary

LuAnn Tyler is a single parent striving to escape a life of endless poverty. Then a mysterious Mr Jackson makes her an offer he thinks no one can refuse: a guarantee to be the winner of the $100 million lottery. But LuAnn won't do it.

Less than 24 hours later, she is fighting for her life and running from a false murder charge. Jackson's offer - and its condition that she leave the country forever - seems her only hope.

Ten years later LuAnn secretly returns to the United States to begin a new life with Matthew Riggs, a man whose origins are as murky as her own. But a canny reporter has picked up her trail, as have the FBI - and Jackson. Matt Riggs is the only person who can help her. But is help what Matt intends, or is he, too, closing in for the kill?

Suspense-filled roller-coaster action from one of the world's master storytellers.

A little bit different from Baldacci

I thought I had read all of Baldaccis books then I came across this and added it my basket without reading what it was about. I had no idea if it was part of his other series, a sequel etc and started listening to it expecting a rip roaring thriller, I got what I was expecting but the story wasn't at all what I was expecting.

The narrator does a good job of the different characters and keeps the tension building.

The book was full of what if moments where you can put yourself in the main characters position and wonder how you would react.

Predictable in parts, the villain is genuinely intreguing and I would have liked to perhaps know more about them, what they're overall plan is etc but we know enough for the book to work.

I can't see a sequel happening but I liked the characters well enough to see how they're getting on after this book.

Bored narrator bored me

I simply couldn't get past the narrators flat, toneless delivery. Sadly spoilt it for me.

Not up to his usual standard.

As previously reviewed, the Narrator was incredibly boring and I stopped listening after the second chapter. Such a disappointment!

Winning Story

I read this story in paperback about 6 years ago on holiday. It is a good holiday story.
I couldn’t remember the full story or the ending but had enjoyed reading it so decided to get it in Audio as I rarely read now since discovering audio books.
It’s fast paste and exciting but a little dated and the ending is very far fetched.
It’s the only story that I’ve enjoyed the book version best but the only reason for this is the narration it was shockingly terrible. My husband had also read the book version then listened to this and he thought the same.

Excellent!

Don't pick this book if you have other things to do. You won't put it down. Extremely captivating

Don't bother!

Story started out with some room for optimism with beginning of potentially interesting storyline. However did not follow through, became predictable and frankly trashy. Just went on and on. The reader was incredibly irritating, sentimental, and I would avoid her at all costs. I gave it the stars I did for its ability to send me to sleep at night!

Good story, so-so narration

Whilst I enjoyed this story overall, it really felt like the narrator was reading it for the first time - particularly annoying was the tendency to emphasise the wrong parts of sentences. Shame - otherwise, a very well written story.

Unbelievable and uninteresting

This is the kind of book that is for those who like their goodies to be very very good and their baddies to be very very bad. An unbelievable story line populated by unreal characters and at unnecessary length. I amazed myself by actually finishing listening to it, perhaps hoping that somehow it would redeem itself. It didn't. Maybe good for a very long flight..

Had to give up

I don't give up on many books, but the villain (to me) just became too unbelievable. It felt just tiresome to continue and I found I didn't care what happened. The narrator was good though.
So with only 4hrs and 52mins remaining, I abandoned ship
